Nope. All wear surfaces and bearing surfaces on the cam were covered in moly disulfide assembly lube when the engine was put together.

Mine was coated with STP oil treatment. I think it was a manufactures fault.

Has anyone gotten an official statement from Melling about these oil pump failures?

It looks like it has been almost three years since this was discussed but I am rebuilding an engine and have a new Melling oil pump ready to go on.

Were these pump failures an isolated event or do I still need to steer clear of a new Melling oil pump?

Thanks,

Bill

I think the consensus is that the gasket between the end plate and gears was too thin. When you tightened it into the block, it pressed the end plate against the pump gears and it locked up or gauled. I've been reusing the old pump if it passed the clearance specs and wasn't damaged from metal going through it. I suppose you could put some through bolts in your new pump , tighten, and then see how it turns. John

I'll go out on a limb and say the pump itself is not the issue but end clearance once assembled and installed is. You will need to check that end clearance and if insufficient add gasket thickness to get to a good clearance that does not lock up the pump once warm. Why Melling has shipped pumps with end gaskets that are too thin and without any instructions for setting end clearance boggles the mind.

Thank you all for your responses. Surely other folks have used new Melling oil pumps without failures. I will check the new pump out per the Service Manual. Looks like it is supposed to bind without the paper gasket in place and turn freely with the gasket in place- about 0.004 inch clearance.

Bill

By the way, I looked in the box the new pump came in, no instructions included.
