Looking through my small collection of 16" wheels, I have 3 different styles. . . Which style was most common on '2A ? how about on '3A? It seems that Willys did a lot of mix and matching, so there may not be a simple answer.
All are 4.5" . . Photo below shows of two of the three styles: Style 1 has a raised section at each lug nut. Style 2 has a "ring" in the lug nut area, and a "flat" on outer end of "spoke" (circled in photo) Style 3 (not shown) has a "ring" in the lug nut area, but no "flat" on outer end of "spoke" |

Thanks . . I did see that thread, but it mostly talks about solid wheels, a little about 15", . . It does mention two of the wheels I have, but I could not determine which year CJ's used what type. I might need to go back and read it more closely.
In searching I also found some threads that talked about the wheels with the flats on the spokes, and if I remember it was suggested those were on M38 or M38A1 (I forget right now).
I will keep looking, but was hoping someone knows off the top of head.

JF,
On my most recent 3A, I have a pair of Style #1 and a pair of Style #2.
I'm curious about style #2. The thread that Mullen linked doesn't appear to talk about style #2.
It probably belongs on something other than a 2A or 3A, but I have no idea.
I wonder if someone can point JP and myself in the right direction??

I have always hear the stepped rim was from jeep pickups or wagons. I do not have any
For anyone that doesn't know, type one above is a motor wheel, and type three is a Kelsey Hayes.

All of the pick up wheels I have seen have a 1/8 in hole drilled in the outer edge of center. Don't know why. I will look for pic.

That hole I have heard identified the heavier rims built for the M 38.. But, as I said before, I coudl be wrong.. I have seen the hole.. Perhaps we need a Wheels FAQ update.

These are wheels I took off two Willys pick ups and run them on my 47.
These came on a 48 but I guess they are truck wheels. Some tread! . |

#2 in my photo, has a K-H in the lug ring, like shown in Ralf's top photo, (but does not have the 1/8" hole)

#1 is early motor wheel and was mixed with solids... #2 is Kelsey Hayes, with the 1/8 hole at the bolt circle is M38, without the 1/8 hole is M38A1 and M170? #3 is motor wheel.

There is an excellent article about wheels over on the MJeeps forum.
http://willysmjeeps.com/downloads/M38JeepRim.4.pdf The 1/8" hole appears on M-38 wheels and truck wheels. M-38 wheels are 4.5" wide with a safety bead. Truck wheels are wider and have no safety bead. The wheels with the flat area on the outer edge of the disc (wheel #2) are later design wheels. |

Likewise, I'm trying to figure out what rims I want to use on my 1945 CJ2A. It presently has 15" rims that I think are original Kelsey Hayes rims. I want to change over to 16" rims, but will keep the 15" in storage.
Here's another useful link that I came across. Sincerely, John
