i decided I'd check the wheel bearings before heading out on a camping trip with 'old tubby'. But when I took off the cap I found this.  It's the same on both sides.  It appears there is a screw without a head between the nut and shaft.  Is that normal?  How do you get to the bearings?

Someone just got lazy and jammed those in that keyway instead of finding the correct part to lock that hub nut in.  It's probably just a general run of the mill bolt so it should be softer than the spindle so I doubt any damage has been done.

That IS ugly lazy!

Since the hubs are the same as the jeep, the bearings go together the same way.  I would definitely remove those screws to allow you to pull the nuts and any washers still there.  Once you see what you have, you'll be able to order what you need, including the rear seal.

You can either use the jeep Service Manual (SM) or you can get a copy of the Bantam Trailer SM, TM 10-1281 (not much difference between military and civilian), which will also provide more info on your trailer.
