My California titled Jeep used the engine number as the VIN.

Ah good to know having never brought a car in from out of state I did not know that. When I bought my 66 Chevelle the goober that sold it to me (No engine no trans no interior)had lost the title and I ended up with all the previous paper work and bills of sale and a very detailed Bill of Sale from him complete with witness signatures.

I sold it to a local guy who was very experienced with restoring and building Chevy Muscle cars he was quite satisfied with the paper trail and said he would have no trouble registering it once done. The State of CA told me to pound sand the car had been out of their system for more then 10 years so nothing was available short of paying a huge amount of money for a physical paper search in some basement (I said screw that). SO I never ran into this even with the Chevelle.

I tried going to the site.  He has a new and n old site, but I am having problems with both.  I emailed him so I will likely order them that way.

My firewall tags are missing, and so is the passenger-side dash tag.  I have 6 holes there, so it looks like I will order the longer tag.

My frame tag is intact, so in MN that is all you need.  But I will be getting this new tag for the firewall with my 46877 SN engraved.  That is awesome!

Thanks

IRQVET thats interesting I haddn't heard of anyone having to go to OSP for an inspection. Was it due to coming from another state or were you missing a valid title or something.

I'm no expert on the subject, but from what the DMV told me is Oregon requires a 100% VIN inspection on any out-of-state vehicle that comes into Oregon for the first time. I only know two people who bought Jeeps in California and dragged them back up here to Oregon, and both of them had to go through the OSP VIN inspection.

OSP will either look at all the serial numbers and decide which one to use. Or, they can say screw it and issue their own serial number that comes on a custom blue plate that they issue and control.

The VIN number California issued on the title was a mystery. That number didn't match the serial number or body tag. License plates matched, but that was about it. Its possible it was the number off the frame tag, but mine was missing that when I bought it.

California title listed first year sold as early 1949 (even though the serial number puts it built in 1948). That is also why mine is titled as a 1949 when its really a 1948. Back then I guess California based the year on the year it was first sold and titled, and not based on the year it was built.  Mine might have sat on the dealers lot for a while in 1948, until it finally sold in early 1949.

I have a '46 here in Kalifornia that had the similar situation.  The VIN research I did here on the CJ2A Page indicated it was within the range of a 1946, but my registration and title indicated "Year First Sold 00/00/1947, Model Year 1946".  That confused the Hell out of me until I asked the DMV people about it and they told me it was a 1946 year model, and was sold sometime in 1947, but the specific date it was sold in 1947 was not recorded.

Jgodfrey. I have started a frame off rebuild if my 48. Had the indiana title and took it in. A few weeks later DMV told me I had to track down a newer title some place in US. I found my vin in Maryland 155369 but for a 1995 American general truck. (Humvee). Finally got certified letter from Maryland and now waiting on MN DMV to issue my MN title. Hoping they don’t balk for something else. I am in Hastings and still removing stuff. Need to get the steering wheel off but so far no luck.

Let me know if I can do anything to help out

Bitz
