Looks like this 2A has had a steering gear change somewhere over the years, which is mounted to the driver side frame rail immediately behind the front bumper.  Can anyone help identify this gear?  This is the only component that I've not serviced (new lubricant).  I see no way obvious way to drain it nor fill it.

Thanks,

Kevin

3 mount bolt Saginaw is most typically a 525 box. Used on dozens of 1965-1991' GM vehicles. From Novas to 1/2 ton pickups.

Speedway motors has a page on the 525 that tells how to center it properly.

Mark is right except he's one year off. '64 Chevelles and other "A" bodies were the first to use that gear.
While our Ross gears are supposed to be filled with oil and people keep putting grease in them, this Saginaw is supposed to be filled with grease, and people used to put oil in them. Ouch GM had a special grease for them but we never used it. Gear oil will find its way to the bottom and the pitman shaft seal won't hold it. The hole for the top bolt in your picture goes thru into the housing and you can fill it if needed thru there. The only way to get the old lube out is to disassemble the gear and clean it out. Unless it has gotten water or gear oil in it, it should need no service.  BW

So what did you use?  And why not use the GM grease?

I have one of these boxes one of my jeeps, it’s a 4 bolt case from a Chevelle. Bruce is correct, gear oil will migrate through the seal and end up on the floor- at least mine does. I think CV lube is pretty close to what GM originally used.

I thought that Bruce but I went with what one of the web sites I was looking for service info on. I have a NOS Saginaw 525 3 bolt mount 6.25 lock to lock on Chug some guy advertised on eBay as being for a 68 Camaro. BUT he spelled Saginaw incorrectly and no one else happened on the auction I got it for his opening bid of $40.00 and shipping I thought that was a steal.

Mostly, we used chassis grease. About the first time I asked the parts dept for some steering gear lube, I was told that they only had one package in stock, and it had been on the shelf for quite a long time because the older guys didn't use it. The next time I wanted some, they didn't have any. The parts system (early computer) said that since it took so long to sell it there was no need to stock it. It was easier to stick the grease gun nozzle into the housing before the top was installed and squirt it full than to pack it in by hand.
The four-bolt-cover gear is a power steering unit, this one is not.

Thanks to everyone for the answers to my question - the replies have definitely led me to some great information.

I found one particular webpage from Advance Adapters that looks like an entire playbook for the steering conversion I have. There is a TON of good information for all related parts - hopefully others will find it helpful.

Thanks again!
