I had told one of my local jeep buddies that I had been casually browsing for a civilian Bantam trailer. He sent me a note yesterday that one popped up for sale about an hour away on Craigslist. After work yesterday I borrowed a trailer from a friend and went to take a look at it.

The one cool piece of personal history for me is that the building where Bantam built these trailers in Butler, PA was later the same building that my Grandfather worked in after Bantam went out of business and the building was bought and used by Armco Steel.

The trailer was listed for $700, but I managed to work the seller down to $450 since it does need some repairs and a few parts.

At a surface glance it needs:

  • Rust repair on the front bulkhead
  • Rust repair on the front floor
  • New wiring
  • New Tail lights
  • Weld all the bonus holes shut
  • A new right tail light panel
  • New landing leg and pivot
  • New safety chains
I'd say the overall condition is good, pretty solid sheet metal, original solid wheels, so  I'll get it fixed up all in due time.

to many jeeps, parts, and accessories to list here, but apparently enough to keep me in trouble with my wife.

Congrats!  Looks like a decent start point Smile

(lol, and what is it with the paint on the tire thing?  I see this laziness incarnate on a lot of trailers Wacko )

Thanks! Our mutual Friend Steve Crober helped me find it.

Who knows. I’m almost tempted to patch it up and leave the paint as is. It would match my Jeep pretty well.

I agree... leaving it unpainted to match your jeep would look pretty cool.

I've been working on squirting all the hardware down with PB Blaster every few days. I took a brake from cleaning out the gas tank on my 3a to work on the trailer a bit.

I managed to get the coupler loosened up and apart. I'll have to order a rebuild kit for the locking tab and spring.

X4 on not painting the trailer . .  great match with the Jeep.

On a side-note,  also like the patina on that Ridgid pipe wrench. Smile   I work for Ridgid, and always like to see photos of our tools in use.

Landing leg, swivel, swivel pin, safety chains, and tail lights on the way. Can't wait to get some more stuff done to this thing!

I got a handful of parts trickling in as I’m excited to get work on this trailer.

I spend an hour or so this afternoon cutting off some extra stuff, removing the tail lights, and other random stuff welded to the trailer. The biggest hassle was beating out the bolts and held the safety chain and swivel on. Even after spraying them it penetrating oil the past two weeks, they were very stubborn to get out so I ended up cutting the heads off and pounding them out.

Unfortunately the swivel that I bought doesn’t fit the civilian hutch casting. Appears there is a slight difference in the pin location.

moak,
That does look different.  I've done a quick search and so far have seen these that look like the larger one on the T3-C (I would almost bet money it will be the same as a Bantam T3 casting).

I would like to think they could help and give you measurements from the pivot to the pin holes plus width/length to verify you could use one without modification.

This might help with identification (perhaps an M416?)

Hope this helps.

Thanks!  That does seem to be helpful, the gentleman I got it from had a bunch, so I’ll have to see if I can swap it for the correct style.
