A Jeep dealership, about an hour away, has been hosting a "Jeep Jam" for the past 10 years. I have always wanted to check it out, and might do it next weekend . . . modified Wilson now might be up for a drive that far. (and over a mountain pass)
I am most interested in the obstacle courses they set up. Curious to see how the ol' flatfender does. In their ad -> ALL Jeeps!!! Wranglers, Cherokee, Grand Cherokee, Commander, Liberty, Commander, Renegade.... ALL Jeeps ??? Looks like I might be crashing the party in a CJ. If I can attend, hopefully can favorably represent our old Jeeps.

Yea the local Jeep dealer here does the same thing. If my Willys was finished I would attend but having done so twice now with never more then one or two Jeeps I have an interest in a quick sweep of the few vendors and I'm gone.

Enjoyed the trek today. I started out the trip with a convoy of about 18 Jeeps, hosted by a local classic rock radio station. The route they took was not the quickest, but more scenic . . about 60 miles one way. That is one of Wilson's longest trips to date.
At the Jeep Jam, I did participate in the obstacle course. The course basically had 5 "rock" sections with increasing difficulty. Plus some fun stuff in between. Wilson put on a clinic on the first two rock sections. 1) The first one had rocks averaging basketball-size (some smaller, some twice as big). We cruised over that at idle. Some Jeeps had a hard time even on that one. 2) The second one had rocks averaging microwave size, some telephone poles, and some construction barriers laying on their side. We basically idled over that one, no stops, but did a little clanging and banging. This one was actually fun, because I had to chose a line, to avoid banging or getting stuck. The third section was not as much fun, because there was no line to choose, just driving over construction barriers and culverts etc. Wilson ALMOST made it all the way thru without stopping, until the last barrier, then became hopelessly hi-centered. We had to be tugged off. This is photo at beginning of third "rock" section. While waiting for someone to be pulled off the far end, I drove up on the barriers to snap a photo. Almost a perfect showing until the end. Oh well it still looked a lot smoother than most of the Jeeps. I did not try #4 or #5. 4 was even tougher construction barrier 5 was a big-rock pile. I think it would have been impossible for small tire, non-lifted vehicle.

I didn't take any photos, only the one I posted. I will watch to see if others post any of Wilson.
These 2 came up. The "tire" trap. This was actually a little scary for me because the tires were spaced far apart that I was a little concerned I would slip into gap. This shows the end of the 3rd "rock" obstacle . . where I got hi-centered If I get any photos of the #4 an #5 I will share I did not watch #5 too much. Most of the time someone was stuck on top of the pile. Early on, I looked at it, and had an entry line and exit line to try, but when I climbed up on top to look at the middle, I decided there was "no way". The big rocks were spaced too far apart, with no filler. Those cracks would have swallowed my tires. I could not see any line that would have given a narrow track, small tire Jeep any chance.

There were cameras everywhere, but I have not seen anyone posting, other than what I have already shared.

As I think about this more, I have decided that Wilson needs some kind of skid plate under the clutch/brake pivots. On that last obstacle, motion stopped when Wilson became hi-centered, but something unusual also happened. The clutch pedal went to the floor. I thought that something had happened with the bellcrank or linkage, but now realize that the concrete barrier literally rotated the bottom of the clutch lever!!
The photo below shows the skid marks left behind. The bottom of lever was strongly forced against the concrete . . . the forward motion of Jeep caused the bottom of lever to move to the rear (red arrow), causing the clutch to go to the floor. I never had this happen before. I am going to start another thread about new skid plate. I will be installing something similar to what Smfulle did. |

Ron,
I’ve been pretty happy with my cross tube/cross member skid plates. Before installing them I had to fix or replace the cross member twice and the cross tube twice. Since installing them I hardly even think about that stuff anymore as I bang and scrape across those speed bumps at the mall.

My wife was driving an old CJ-5 through the woods and the same thing happened. I thought she broke something when she came walking out of the woods and said the Jeep wouldn't move, the clutch pedal was stuck to the floor.

Still looking for photos, but not having much luck.
I did come across some from this fellow. Here is a photo of him on the #2 rock obstacle. It gives some idea of the difficulty, although from my memory, this was one of the easier parts of it. Kinda like this guy appears to be doing, I was looking ahead, trying to pick a line thru some tougher stuff coming up. Edited by JeepFever - 04 June 2019 at 4:57am |
