Got up this morning and drive to a trailhead about a half hour from my house then drove the trail up to what we call Inspiration Point. It’s really right on the top of a mountain called Willard Peak. The trail is pretty easy, I never got out of high range 2wd, but it is beautiful and gets up to about 9500 ft. I can see Willard peak from my back deck on most days. Today it’s clouded over as you will see in the photos below.
In spite of the poor visibility it was a very enjoyable ride. In the picture below, if you look closely you can see terraces in the hillside across the way. These terraces were made all over Utah and the west for erosion control back in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCCs). The CCCs were a kind of make work program where men needing work did these kinds of projects all over and sent most of the money home to there families. My Grampa, who owned my Jeep and is the reason I call it Grampa’s Jeep, was part of the CCCs. I don’t know that he worked on these particular terraces, but he did work on projects like this. Here’s a closer look at the terraces. We made it to the top, but the view was slightly limited. Still a little snow on the back side. Mountain wildflowers we’re looking good. Just took this one picture on the way down as it started to clear. If the peak clears off in the next day or so, I’ll get a picture and show you where we were. |

Great photos and story!
My Great Uncle worked in CCC. He helped build the Shenandoah National Park in Virginia. That view from top of trail reminds me of the view from Black Bear Pass almost 1 year ago with you. That was disheartening, but the day ended up great!!

Nice pics, even with the cloud cover. My father was in the 3-Cs too. He worked on some structures at a lake in Idaho. Those structures have since been demolished and/or drowned by expansion of the lake. Dad and Mom drove up that way about 25 years ago; I think Dad was disappointed to not see the things he helped make.

We had a cabin at Panguitch Lake, UT which is about 3 hours south of you. The CCC's did amazing work and it is visible all over the U.S. Between Richfield and Beaver is a back country dirt road that goes up and over the mountains and in between was a beautiful CCC camp that we often ate lunch at. It still had the buildings, center circle area with a tall wooden flag pole, and a walk-in cooler that was dug out of a mountain side.. A shot distance N. East was a small picturesque lake named Puffer Lake. we would stop there every time simply to take in the view. The area looked similar to the pics you posted. If you don't already do so, stop in Beaver at the ice cream and cheese factory. YUM Jim

I said I’d post a pic from my house of where this trail goes.
First pic is from my back deck. I live in suburbia so you can only see the very tip of the oeak over the neighbors’ house. The arrow is the spot we parked at the top in the fog. Went a bit down the road to an open spot to take this picture. A little hazy this morning. |

On the way down I had to wait a while while a group was recovering a sxs that had gone off this steep slope to the left.
Here’s a shot looking straight down the slope. Here’s what the thing looked like when they got it up. They told me the guy was by himself when he went over. They only found him by pinging his phone. He was dead when they found him. Edited by smfulle - 13 Oct. 2019 at 5:11am |

It would be interesting to find out if the accident caused his death or if his death caused the accident. Will the paper report the coroner's findings?
