Hi All,
Got my M38 last night, (note to self, never buy a Jeep sight unseen).
Anyway how can I figure out what year model the is body, it was for sure a Mil. jeep ?

The head has a by pass hose running from it to the water pump, don't know if this is correct.

Trans wont shift into 3rd. ,1st 2nd and Rev are usable  shifting forks maybe?
At least it's an old military jeep, that I like.

Head and bypass are correct for an M-38 as well as a CJ3A. If your Jeep has the data plates on the dash, one will have the “Date Of Delivery” or DOD... Also if you tip the passenger seat ahead, there should be a rectangular S/N tag attached to the lower face of the wheel house. S/N will tell year of mfg.

Enjoy your Jeep!, Lee

On a M38 there was a set of dash plates and a plate behind passenger seat on rear fender well. Those are the only two numbers on it.

from your earlier pictures it looked like you have a lot of the M38 there.  M38 hood check, windshield check, grill check, lifting shackle brackets over bumper check.  You will notice the frame is boxed between the grill and front bumper. That boxed section is M38-only.
Check the engine serial number. It's on the flat spot facing upward behind the water pump.
When you rework the trans shifter check out the shifter tower  The Military jeeps had a different shifter tower that is a little more water tight.
Does it have the 24 volt and fording vent doodads?
The M38 has lots of M38 specific gizmos to play with. You'll have fun with it.

The "MC" part is definitely M-38.  I once owned MC55145 but I got stupid and let it go.  Cry
There's a reason it's called Ol' Unreliable

Never had a M38 before still have a really hacked up GPW. Will check out the engine numbers. It has been converted to 12 volts. Was a little upset when the P/O never mentioned the fact it will not go into 3rd gear, but my fault for buying sight unseen. Anyway I do believe it'll all work out, looking forwards to getting it drivable. Thanks for all the M38 info.
Bob
