My brass horn ring on the column is mounted on the shaft too low, in the picture you can just see it at the edge of the contact hole on the outer shaft. I was thinking of heating the brass to be able to move the ring into the correct position melting out the bushing inside. Then I could install some plastic to work as a bushing once I get it in the correct position. I've tried using a chisel to move it but it won't budge. |

Does any body know what the material inside the brass bushing is? Hopefully it will burn out

Not sure, but I think it's just plastic,
Wouldn't it be easier to pull the steering wheel, loosen the clamp and pull the tube up far enough to get access to the ring and push it up an inch or two? Not saying it can't be done, but I'd be amazed if you can burn that inner ring out, move the brass ring and get something behind the brass ring so that it runs true around in order to keep the horn contact IN contact, all through that little hole.

I just set the outer tube on the steering box to show that it was seated all the way down on the box. When I bought this jeep the previous owner had welded the small contact hole up with sheet metal so I used another original tube. I don't know how the ring got moved down, you can just barely see it in the picture at the bottom of the opening. I've beat on it as much as i can but it won't move up.

Is that tube the correct length for your column? Since there are two different lengths of columns, you might have the wrong one. If it is too long, maybe you could cut the excess length off at the bottom and the ring would meet the hole correctly. If your tube is the correct length, forget what I said.

Just some follow up, I heated the horn ring up with a propane torch and was able to knock the ring into the correct position. The hardest thing was soldering the wire on to the ring, it didn't want to take the solder but I think I got it. Thanks for the replies!

Well, if the horn stays on all the time you will know the plastic insulator melted.
Yes, soldering that wire onto the ring can be very difficult to get right. Glad my steering gear is a later model without that ring and brush design. The later model was for the CJ3A, and my late production 48 CJ2A was built on the 3A chassis with the later steering gear, and 3A frame.
