I got the two Jeeps home Saturday, and spent the weekend taking the "Parts Jeep" the rest of the way apart.
It has a very good frame. It is supposed to be a 48 and from what I can tell it is another late 48, like the one I already had. The frame is the CJ3A / M38 style with no gussets for the bumper. The engine stands line up so was configured for the earlier engine mounts. The guy I bought it from had already pulled the head and pan on the engine. I removed a main cap and rod cap. The crank looks good, there is hardly any ridge in the cylinders, pistons are .20 over, and there is an old rebuild plate riveted to the block. No visible cracks. Good signs it may be a good core for a rebuild. My other 48 has a cracked block, and the frame horns are bent up, so I am real happy with this parts Jeep. The other intact Jeep turns out to be a 47, I think I can get it running without much work, all I need then is some better tires.

Well, after reading through this thread, I am feeling more Normal.
Yes, I do suffer from cronic JAS also, as probably many other members here. :) Three weeks ago, I drove a 300-mile loop to purchase an F-head engine from a young chap who replaced it with a Vortex V-6. The whole journey I felt "normal" and with a big smile of gratification that I was saving an engine from the recycle yard, and adding another "treasure" to my Orphan collection. I don't need the engine so much as all of the "accessories" that came with it, and the excuse for a wonderful outing through the Sierra Nevada Mountains. I hope someone places the wiring explanation into the "Tech" section. :) I am terrible at electrical ignition diagnostics. _ _ a real Achilles heel. My buddy mentioned that if the Orphan's set too long they will grow Roots ! hahahaha Enjoy your new treasures ! Edited by Greaser007 - 08 June 2020 at 4:48pm |

I too am a JAS sufferer. But it doesn't feel like suffering, especial with this on line support group. I just picked up a '45 Bantam T3C to go with my '46 CJ2A.

Len Is this the F head that was below Susanville on Hwy 395? A guy has one out there that has P/S bracket and other cool stuff but too darn far for me to go get it.

Got the 47 running Saturday. It was as I suspected. The guy I bought it from had installed a new distributor (electronic ignition) and didn't have the timing or firing order right.
The gas tank was full of 10 year old gas which had turned to varnish and black gooey stuff. I disconnected the line and it barely dripped for about half an hour then clogged up with the gooey stuff. I pumped it out, poured some fresh gas in and sloshed it around, then more gooey stuff followed by a lot of rust. Going today to pick up a new gas tank, a kit for the carburator, and a new set of plugs. Until I get the kit, I just cleaned out the bowl on the carb, and cleared the float valve. I hooked up a boat tank, started it up, and tuned it a bit. The little flathead runs like a sewing machine, no knocks, no rattle, no blow-by, and after it ran a few minutes no smoke. At idle it purrs like a kitten. I am very tickled with this Jeep so far. I can't drive it on the road until I get new tires, and replace the too short wheel studs on the front. It has been converted to disc brakes up front, but whoever did that did not replace the stock studs and the nuts only get about half purchase. Still, all major components are in working order. I have driven it a little in in the field, and all major components work. It starts right up, goes, and stops just fine.

That's great to hear you got it running so easily!
At this point we are planning on heading your way with these wheels next Saturday if that works for you. Edited by CJ2atlas - 16 June 2020 at 4:44am |

I wish I had JAS. Haha! But a mere 1/4 acre and small garage limit my ability to acquire the goodstuff. Haha! That being said, where in East TN are you located Pappy? I'm from Chattanooga and frequently visit home and whenever there I try to stop by Quarter-Ton & Military and see what goodies I can bring home.

Half my family is from Texas, so when all were still alive there used to be some travel between here and there. Now I am am the old generation, and all but one of my Texas relatives are gone on.
I live about 50 miles North of Chattanooag, next time you are coming up send me a PM and maybe we can get together and maybe you will get infected with JAS. Texas is a big place, you may need more land. If you play a banjo, fiddle or guitar bring it along and we can look at my Jeeps while we pick a tune, or if you don't play anything, I can pick a banjo, while you sing, and if that don't give you JAS, or BAS (Banjo Aquisiton Syndrome) you are imune.

First time trying to upload a picture of the 47 CJ2A I got a couple weeks ago. Running good, need new tires, waiting on some wheels supposed to come this weekend. Sat for 10 years, cleaned carb, and got a new gas tank, and driver seat frame today to install this weekend. Will have it road worthy soon!

I also have an old Warn 8500 lb winch, and a "New" top which was never installed on a Jeep, both left over from a build I did over 30 years ago.
At one time I thought about selling the top, and had someone wanting to buy it, but I never could find all the parts which got separated when the box fell apart on my last move 20 years ago. Glad now I didn't sell it. When I look at new "Tiger Tops" they are $999.00 which is 3 times what I paid for this one, and I finally found the box I put the hardware in. Top is like new, and the windows are clear and show no sign of hardening. This 47 is going to be an easy project, not a restoration, just going to get it road worthy and drive it on fishing trips.

Just think, had the British and French not been such cheapskates and assumed Uncle Sam would just leave it all for them, all that equipment would have stayed out of the ocean and gotten used. Or if Uncle Sam had been willing to wait a bit, he could have made a few trips and saved it all. But NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO...
