Should a gasket be installed in the location shown? I do not see it in any of my books, however, the existing bearing cap I removed appears to show signs of an old one? This would be installed in front of the shims. Thank you!

No, because it would affect the shim pack thickness and that would affect the preload on the tapered bearings that are used in the rear output shaft. Spray Copper Coat both sides of each shim lightly and let it get tacky. It will serve as a sealant between the case and the shims and each of the shims to each other as well as the rear output shaft bearing retainer.

Another option is a lightly spray coat of Permatex Spray Sealant on all the shims after cleaning and before re-assembly.

Ok, great! Thanks guys... That makes sense. Here is an actual photo of the part that got me wondering: I have no doubt someone has been in here before me, so I'm not surprised to find things wrong.

Originally there was a gasket placed between the rear bearing cap and the brake backing plate.
No gasket is associated with the rear bearing cap shims. The recess area pointed to in pic above is for the bearing cone.

Wouldn't that be the bearing cup rather than the cone? |

Yes exactly, not sure why I typed in “cone” instead of “cup”.
I guess I had the term “race” in mind which I don’t like to use. Willys always refers to them as “cups” and not as a “race” as many other will call it.
