Not much flatfender footage in this video, but I did drive mine on this Christmas tree hunt. The day wound up with this water rescue of a jeepster.
To be fair to Tony the Jeepster driver, we had just watched a big Ford Bronco with 40 inch tires test this pond out and cut a few doughnuts on it before Tony made his try. It ended up being one of those interesting experiences with no real harm done and a different kind of video for me to publish. |

Not a Jeepster; a Jeep Commando C-101. Lots of differences in the sheet metal and driveline from a CJ-5.

Ah but the hood emblem does say Jeepster Commando.....so they are (at least in my parts and evidently in Stan's too, commonly called by either name)
That said, I usually use Commando when describing this vehicle but have been known to use the whole phrase. Edited by rocnroll - 06 Dec. 2021 at 12:04pm |

Around here they have always been refereed to by the full name. Jeepster Commando at least with people I have talked to about them. A couple of very nice ones wander around these parts.

Sounds like Tony was luckier than me.
I once made the mistake of following a big Ford through a mud hole, more like a pond, in a nearly new Isuzu Trooper. I got stuck nose down with the air intake sucking muddy water into the engine before I shut it down. The crankshaft journals looked like they had been threaded when I tore down the engine to rebuild it.
A costly mistake for which I lay some of the blame on my friend Bill who brought along a fine single malt. Edited by Oldpappy - 06 Dec. 2021 at 1:09pm |

If you can't get there in a Jeep you don't need to be there!

From Wikipedia ...
C-101... (1966-1971) The Jeepster Commando came in three types: Revival Jeepster, Commando convertible, and an open body roadster with no top at all. The Revival Jeepster, named "Jeepster", as shown in hood side emblem an VIN decode or Jeepster Convertible was the showcase vehicle of the fleet, offering deluxe interior appointments, powered convertible top, and a Continental tire kit (available only for this model). The Commando convertible offered the same body with just the basic finish and equipment. C-104... (1972) The Jeepster name was removed after 1971, but the model remained in production for two more years as the Jeep Commando. In 1972, it received a "conventional" full-width grille (see picture). The Commando had one of three AMC engines, the 232 cu in (3.8 L) or 258 cu in (4.2 L) AMC Straight-6 or the 304 cu in (5.0 L) AMC V8. A total of 20,223 AMC-spec "C104" Jeep Commandos were made in 1972 and 1973. And just as an added note the C-101 and C-104 is referencing wheelbase in inches. I learned this when starting with frame rails from a C-104 as my base for building 'Frankie'. Edited by rocnroll - 06 Dec. 2021 at 3:20pm |

The original Jeepster was 2WD while the Jeepster Commando is 4 X 4. It makes a huge difference in puddles like that one. So to many folks a Jeepster is 2WD & a Commando is 4WD. |

I guess terminology/nomenclature can be confusing, especially when one's experience is limited (me).
The main point of this post was to give people a chance to see the interesting, at least to me, recovery. I especially thought it was amazing that two winches doubled up with snatch blocks could not pull one small Jeepster Commando out of a hole in the ice. The one front tire jammed up against the edge of the ice shelf held it back and probably would have torn the front axle, or frame horns where the winch lines were attached, off if they had pressed it with the two doubled up winches. |

I know that sinking feeling that comes when you spent a bunch of time prepping for contingencies and you realize that you are still not prepared. And then there's that good feeling you get when the folks around you come through for you!
