The brown-haired Santa Claus lady in the RHD Cherokee was just here, and left me not only my reflector and splash sheild(thanx Matt), but my 2008 Classic Jeep Calendar as well! A Merry(little bit early) Christmas to me! Thanx again to Matt & Low, it's a thing of beauty, and it's going to cover-up the extra holes that PO made to mount a RH tail-light. Now I gotta know-- what are the correct fasteners to hold it on? BW PS After I paint the plug(I'm gonna try genuine imitation spray-can chrome on the inside) I'm gonna seal it with silicone-- I haven't decided yet whether to fill it with nitrogen or assemble it in a vacuum. It is NOT a Jeep Willys! It is a Willys jeep.

the '45 manual says this:
GROUP 15-19-REFLECTOR
640008 REFLECTOR, reflex, assembly
53366 SCREW, rd-hd (round head), 1/4-28 X 1/2, reflector to body
5914 NUT, hex., 1/4-28, reflector to body screw
52706 WASHER, lock, 1/4 in., reflector to body screw
if i was a betting man, i'd interpret the "screw" to be a pan head bolt...
hope this helps ...low

Some minor disagreement. First the '45 parts list would only deal with the black reflector.
The '49 parts list has both reflectors and for the chrome reflector gives the same nut and lockwasher but a different screw: 54119 SCREW. rd. hd., 1/4"-28 x 1/2" . Interesting that the screw has a different part number but is described identically. I think, since both say, "rd.hd", that the "screw" is a 1/4"-28 stove bolt, but with a different finish. Maybe there are some period pictures that will tell us what the finish is. The '49 parts list contains many screws. Most are rd. hd, a few are pan hd. so I'd be confident that the reflector to body screws are round head - other wise they'd be described as "pan hd." The trick is to figure out the finish for both the black reflector and the chrome relfector.

I know I said it before - but it doesn't happen very often in this house - the post was brilliant this morning!
Thanks to you both, Matt and Low, there isn't much better than this. The reflectors look brilliant. I'm impressed with the quality of the plating. |

Thanks Harriet, Glad you like the reflectors. Not a bad price for a decent part. Funny how some parts survived 60 years and some didn't. This was one of those parts that I couldn't find for the life of me! Any ideas for what else we can tackle as a group?

A couple of things that may or may not be feasible: Outside rear view mirror arms and plastic reflectors - Grotelite No. 100 and Stimsonite No. 12. It might be feasible to make small quantities of the mirror arm, but I doubt that you could make the plastic lenses economic, but if you could, they'd sell. I wonder if a mold could be made for the lenses and if someone could melt red plastic from el cheapo lenses in their oven? I'm really out of my element on this. Someone save me! |

<snicker> Yeah, yeah...in a minute Sam...lemme finish tying my shoes first, and lettin' the cat out...<smirk> I believe that you'd have to have the reflectors "injection molded", at the least. I think what you're suggesting there would be "cast", and they wouldn't work out very well, I'm afraid. Now the mirror arms, on the other hand...and we're talking about the one-piece tubular type, yes? That would be a good one...and maybe even the brackets to go with it? |

I just read this entire post again, it was a good one. So it's been 7 months since everyone got their reflectors, everyone still happy? Does everyone have them installed? Any photos? Jeff, (jpet) what's your serial #? I still have one of my two I was saving, it'll look better on your Jeep than on my wall. Edited by trader_reed - 31 July 2008 at 2:42am |
