How often to people lube the grease fittings on their Jeeps? - This would be address to people who use their Jeeps - not the restored and never used vehicles. If you don't lube all of the fittings - which ones do you lube?
I lubed all the grease fitting this past weekend on our 1946 - it look about 20 minutes. I grease them before a long outing usually. I am using marine general purpose grease.
My count on this Jeep of fitting is 34 (29 Standard plus 5 Non-Standard). There may be more. Standard grease fittings: 6 - Front leaf springs 6 - Rear leaf springs 5 - Steering 1 - Steering Drag link 2 - Clutch and brake 6 - Drive Shafts 1 - Transfer Case shift levers 2 - Rear Axle Other grease fittings on this Jeep: 3 - Front PTO Winch (engage lever, slip joint, idler) 1 - Rear NATO Pintle (swivel joint) 1 - Ross Steering Box (Added one for the bushings) The OEM guidance is every 1,000 miles or more often - daily in the dust and dirt. Here is the link to the Lube Chart and guidance. Edited by Stev - 14 May 2019 at 3:23pm |

I typically do same thing (before long outings) . . I don't think it took 20 minutes for me, but I don't have as many (different steering & drivetrain etc.)

I usually lube the ones that squeak and annoy me ... if whatever it is gets tight or starts making grinding noises it gets two pumps
(seriously, I'll do them all once in the spring, and barring something needing attention I'll call that good)

The recommended intervals are probably plenty for what you need with most people’s use of their jeep. Lots of hard off road, maybe more often. I tend to grease mine before taking it somewhere, more to check out everything than for a needed greasing. As long as you can get grease out of the joint in a couple of pumps of the gun you are well lubricated.
I will also say that I grease the steering and springs more often than the driveshafts, and rarely grease the rear axle bearings as I don’t want to push grease past the seals and into the brakes.

I have yet to see a part/component wear out from too much lubrication.

My understanding is that despite the usual presence of a grease nipple on the steering box, it takes the 80/90 weight lube. Changed mine to a plug so I don't forget. Course I could have gotten this wrong. Wouldn't be the first time.

I have made a habit of greasing my Jeeps both before and after I take them on any kind of wheeling trip. I do it afterwards to ensure that I push out any water that it may have taken on while fording any water.

3A Steve,
Yes, gear lube in the Ross Steering box . I added a grease fitting in the bushing area of the Ross box. Odd picture - held the phone up side down - looking into the engine bay, the engine on the left side of the picture, frame rail is on the right side of the picture. Exhaust pipe is in the center. |

Stev, shouldn't your drag link have a zerk at each end?

The zerk is between the two bushings. It is not centered in the space between the bushings only because that would put it to close the engine/ oil pump and I could not get the grease gun to it.

I think he may be referring to the drag link only. It has grease cavities and springs on both ends. So maybe add two more grease points to the list? Good idea on the steering box.

You stated "1 - Steering Drag link". The drag link has a zerk on each end. The pic shows your sector shaft bushing lube mod.
