While in sure it doesn't really matter and all, I am curious to know what kind of grease you guys run in your jeeps.
I personally like Lucas oil products so I went with an agricultural/mining equipment grease. I thought about using marine, but I figured I wouldn't be underunderwater too much.....I hope I'd just like to hear what and why

What ever is in my grease gun (Mobil 222 typically) give everything a shot in the spring and after returning from a trip to push out any water & dirt.

In a trucking magazine that came in one day.
There was an article about grease. They set up test to evaluate various brands. Sorry but all I remember about that article was that Jiffy smooth peanut butter ranked in the mild of the pack. ππππ

It's gonna be a hard pass on the peanut butter.... to expensive... That's it.
I even packed my steering box with the mining grease via the little plug, to flush out the remaining water in it, cause there was a lot. It was sitting longer than I thought

Marine grease. Between the fording creeks (Ohio roads in picture above) , rain and sitting outside. Seems to work. Edited by Stev - 19 Sep. 2019 at 1:18pm |

I wouldn't dare attempt a stunt like that here in Delaware. With soil in most areas composed of clay and sand, you'd be stuck before you knew it and then it would try to swallow you.
I have a 1965 case 930, big huge work horse tractor only make 83 horses but about a million billion foot pounds of torque, got stuck going through what I thought was shallow mud (no sitting water). I've never seen so much black smoke and fire come out of it before. It tried, damned if it didn't. It took four people a week and a lot of digging to get her out. I don't go near that area anymore.... and it's on my property

There's plenty of posts about how oil is supposed to go there. It's your Jeep, so do what works for you.

Very good question Valvoline and other manufactures make so many different grades. why? seems that a lot of guys use synesthetic grease , red in color that I notice. I use Valvoline high temp that they say is suited for fleet of vehicles. light green in color, Is it any better than another??

I read some where that a cup of grease and some graphite lube is supposed to go in there... frankly I suppose any water dispersing rust preventive petroleum product works. It won't eat the seals away so I'm ok with it for now

I do understand why you'd put oil in there. Frankly that's probably the right choice, you think I could shoot some oil in there to get the bushing without taking the cover off and cleaning the grease out?

That would depend on how much grease is in there. If you could get some of the grease out and then squirt some oil in, you might be okay. If there's too much grease, your oil might just come out the top of the box instead of going to the bushings. There is no seal on the top of the bearing retainer to which the outer tube is clamped. Oil will come out of there if it can. Voice of bitter experience here...
