I had mine sealed 25 years ago and never had an issue. Way cheaper than buying one.

All kinds of ideas on cleaning the insides have been discussed....GooGle.

One of the best is strapping it to a jacked up tractor wheel with a handful of nuts and bolts in it.....have also heard variations of that.....golfballs, BBs, buckshot, etc.

If you're gonna seal it anyway....shaking it with nuts and bolts and some mineral spirits will clean alot. (most of its probably loose scale anyway)

Lots of variations....search Google for discussions here and old tractor forums.

I Youtubed it as well and it looks like it works okay on tanks with relatively light rust, but I'm not sure how it would handle this. Since I'm asking kind of oddball questions, here's another: Is there any chance of getting a sandblaster nozzle in through the filler tank and the fuel sender hole? I know it won't catch everything, but it might get enough off so you could then seal it with POR 15. The tank looks so good on the outside, I'd just hate the idea of scrapping it.

A number of kits out there. POR-15, Eastwood, Bill Hirsh. Usually 3 parts—rust removal, metal etch and sealer.  Or similar parts.  Good luck.  If it’s original, try to save it

I think POR-15 is gas proof. That stuff is wicked tenacious.

A lot depends on how badly you want to save the tank, and how much time and effort you are prepared to put in.

Mine was bad, but i have no option to get a new one. I had to save mine. I cut an end panel out, got in there with mechanical equipment, cleaned it out so that the metal was shiny new, cut and formed a new end panel, had it silver soldered in, and then lined the tank for future rust protection.

This is more effort than most would go to to save a tank, but my point is that almost any tank can be saved if you really want to save it.

I should have mentioned I had it done at my local radiator shop. They cleaned it for me, but I'm not sure how they did it.

I've had a few jeeps in my shop with plastic tanks and I noticed that the gas caps didn't fit to well.

to many jeeps, parts, and accessories to list here, but apparently enough to keep me in trouble with my wife.
