Let The Games Begin

Progress report - Wheels have been painted. They are a little thin in some places and will get another coat. Grill, fenders, and tailgate are primed and ready to paint. My body man took some decent paint samples that were remaining on the inside of one of the wheels (autumn yellow) and on the inside of a grill (pasture green) to his paint shop. 3 hours later, a suitable match was obtained for both! Windshield piece from Classic Enterprises fit in windshield frame perfectly. I have included a picture of the paint formulations below.



The top code is for the wheels. Bottom code is for the body.

Seat frames have been powder coated. I have installed new foam and covers on them. New tires are mounted on rims. So, I installed them on the chassis this evening. I wanted to see what the seats looked like in the tub.

This project is coming along nicely!

Last week, I installed the fuel tank, fuel line, and seats. Put some fuel in the tank, pulled the choke out, squirted some gasoline in the carb, and it started right up. While I was checking things out, I noticed an oil and fuel leak. So, I shut down and repaired both leaks. My voltage regulator is shot, so I am waiting on a new one. Getting closer.

Update-My generator had a bad armature. Armature was replaced. New voltage regulator installed from Walcks. My old Autolite armature had a bad resistor and that did not help out my old generator. Obviously this didn't solve the lack of power and hard starting. I had a fellow shade tree mechanic come over. We checked compression on all cylinders and it was adequate at 65+ psi on all. Had spark as well. Hmmm - must be timing. I mentioned to him that I thought there was a chance that I installed the flywheel 180 degrees off when I put the motor back together. We switched around the plug wires to fire in the 4-2-1-3 order instead of the normal 1-3-4-2 order. It started up immediately and idled pretty well. Motor was running really rich as evidenced by black smoke out of exhaust. I pulled the top off the carburetor and measured the distance of the float from the base at 3/8" as it is supposed to be. However, I adjusted the tab on the float to increase the spacing to just under 1/2". When I was putting the top back on the carburetor, I found that the accelerator pump plunger appeared to be in a bind and not moving freely up and down. I really didn't do any more than turn the stem of the plunger around and made sure that it moved freely on the linkage. I started the motor and the rough idle and black smoke were gone. Motor has power and pick up like it never has had before. I'm glad it runs well, but I will need to pay better attention next time I put a L head motor back together to make sure that I get the darned timing sequence correct to eliminate the guesswork.

Nice Jeep!  The small dents in the tailgate just add to the character--as if it were needed.
