Starting my "build".

The tires have some pretty bad cracking.

Started the tear down today.

I found one of the fender mount tabs broken.  This will be an easy fix.

The driver's side shock mount bolt holes rusted to the point that I was able to pull the bolt heads through the frame.  As far as rust goes, this was the worst part of the trailer.

Getting the tub off was actually easier than I expected.

Although, roughly half of the bolts broke.  Blessing in disguise since it made the removal quicker.  Big smile

So today I got the tub off, the frame off, the hitch off, the reflectors, tail lights and drain plugs off.  I still need to remove the axle from the springs.  I'm pretty close to being ready to start sand blasting.

The nice feature on a 416 is that the tub unbolts!

Great progress! Are you going to fab up a tailgate or weld a panel back in? I would suggest some side supports like on a Bantam if you're going to stick with a tailgate.

Thanks guys.  Well, at first I was leaning toward putting a wall back on to make it like original.  However, now I am pretty sure I'll be putting in a tail gate.  It just makes sense.

So, tell us where you are going with this project? -Off-road trailer, historical rebuild, work trailer, custom camper with pup up tent or other - just wondering.

I hadn't planned on this trailer, or been in the market for one.  I was wasting some time looking at craigslist and happened upon it.  I've always liked them and the price was lowest I have seen and ended up grabbing it.  So there's not a big plan at the moment.  I'll clean it up and fix some of the small issues.  Then I'll build the backwall/tailgate and paint it OD Green.  I hesitate to call it a restoration because I'm not returning it to original.

So I guess for now it's going to be a utility trailer.

*Edit - This would have been a more exciting answer, but with a bigger let down at the end.  :)

My top secret utility trailer sounds similar - Note the non stock Gama Goat light covers and the spare forward mounted in the bed.

90 percent of the time, not having a gate is OK (that might change as I age).  I do think it would be a more functional trailer if it had a gate.  The Marine Corp had a better version of this trailer, that the trailer box could be unbolted and lifted off to make it into a little flat bed trailer.  The USMC trailer also had two low Jerry Can mounts forward of each tire and a set of lifting hoops (two on each side).

At some point I would like to put the deck on the frame, so it can be used as flat bed.  You could make that modification easily at this point in your project.  You could also add a under the bed spare tire mount that could lower like some modern day vehicles have (Junkyard item).  That would be handy - watch the balance on the tongue weight.

I like the idea of doing an expedition trailer.  However, I don't think it would get used as such enough to justify it.  I do hope to use it on some Jeep road trips though.  I tend to change my mind a lot, so we'll see where this goes.

If you do an expedition trailer - something to dream about ...  I read about a guy switching out the trailer axle for a rear axle for the Jeep he was taking on the trip.  That way he had a full spare axle along on the trip.  Pretty cool idea.

Yeah, that isn't going to happen.  LOL.  It'll probably look similar to yours when I'm done.

I have 4 M416's, one with a add on tailgate, and I never seem to open it. I guess it all depends on what you use them for!.

I mainly use mine for firewood, it's not heavy, were I hauling engine blocks and gravel perhaps I would use the tailgate, and my pickup has a tailgate for that stuff, LOL. Also as others said, unless you support the sides in some way they are very flimsy.

Have any of you switched to civilian rims?  My tires are cracked really bad.  From what I have read, if I keep the rims, I would have to have tubes.  So I am considering putting civilian rims on it.  In my searching, I haven't found a good answer as to what civilian rim fits the M416 hub.  It seems the bolt pattern isn't the issue, rather the center hole diameter.  Any suggestions?  TIA.

The M416 rims are a bummer and so are the studs.  This is another reason to change out the axle for a CJ2A rear and just run tires that will also fit your Jeep.  Back to the expedition trailer dream...With a full floater and lockout hubs ...
