Welcome to all you Flatfender Fans! It's time to make plans to join the 2014 CFFC Fall Colors Tours! This year we'll hit the peak of the fall colors during the week of 22-27 September! I would like to personally invite all of you reading this to join me for a grand week of making memories, taking photos, driving Willys Jeeps, and sharing some comraderie with the best folks on earth - other Willys owners!  For those who have never been to the FCT, what kind of colors are we talking about? There's an example below. As always, we'll open our home to everyone who attends. Camping is available here on the Thirsty Dirt Ranch. There's lots of great hotels, motels, and B&B's in the area for those who prefer some comfort overnight. What in store for us this year? I will explore some new ground again for this year, and I'm thinking about a "two-pass" ride that will take us over the Continental Divide and back again on a day-long tour. We'll also experiment with a Willys First Aid Kit containing some spare parts to keep us ALL on the trail and moving. If you've never been here then we'd like to welcome you to a great experience. Welcome Realdeal and Lee! We'll be glad to have you along with us this year.
For lodging the Buena Vista Chamber of Commerce has about 30 places they list in our valley. There are a few listings for Twin Lakes and Leadville. Avoid those only because your commute from there to the Thirsty Dirt Ranch would be a long one. For something very close to the ranch, look for a Nathrop address. And as always we'll have the campground set up on the ranch for those who want to keep costs down and have the gear to sleep outside. I did set up a tent for a trio of travellers last year who did not have the gear to camp. If we need to we could do that again.
Jpet had the most unusual camp setup last year, and one that worked very well - as long as the wind didn't blow too hard. I'm looking forward to see what improvements he makes to it for this year! It was quite the setup with 2 private bedrooms, a full kitchen, a fireplace, and a patio where folks collected in the evening to join voices in song. ------------- M38Mike 46 CJ2A SAMCJ2A 4?-5? My frame horns are kinda, sorta, just about, almost somewhat straighter. I'm sure they will be better by September. We'll be getting home from a bike ride in Tuscany on the 20th, so with the jet lag I may still mess it up again! ------------- BOULDER 48 2A |

Guess I'll be watching from my computer again this year - My plans were to have the 49 ready and running by September but found out yesterday that there is a stupid trade show in Chicago that I must attend that runs 4 days - this work thing really is interfering with my play time! I know that the reports will be just as good again.

Keith, I'm glad to hear that you'll be with us again!
 You're skills at repair and installations were a huge asset last year. I'm very glad to have your knowledge and skills on our team again for this year. Welcome back!!Terry, I expect you to ride your bike VERY CAREFULLY while you're in Tuscany! I don't want to hear about you going to the hospital instead of the local hotel for the color tour. As for the jet lag, you just need to get Ginny to drive for a while so you can take a nap.
 Now Bruce, we planned FCT around the muzzle loader season just so we could RELY on you to bring some fresh game meat to the grand feast for FCT. Don't let us down Pard!!
 John, I'm hoping you can spend more than 2 days on the ground. I know we'll talk calendars when we get to your place in June, but I'm hoping you'll have it all figured out to spend the week with us in September.
 Tumbleweed, I'm thinking that you need to take a detour on your return trip from Chicago thru DIA with a rental car to get up to my place. Just 3 hours west of DIA. Bruce, I've got all the butcher shop tools we need to slice and dice, and plastic-pack in air-tight packages. I've still got blood stains on the shop floor from my elk in November. I've got a Little Chief smoker we can use to smoke up some meat, and a dehydrator too. Even have a meat grinder for making burger. Speaking of burger, we made meatloaf out of 2 lbs of elk last night. It's already gone, no leftovers! Yum! We've set aside about 6 lbs of elk burger for Steve's elk chilli for this year's FCT, packed it special so we'd know what it was for.

Hi Mike,
Just confirming the dates. In years past, there would be a trail ride on the Saturday at the end of the FCT. The 27th is listed as the last day, which is a Friday.

you might want to consult with a 2014 calendar, like the ones that Ricco79 produced. I think you will find that the 27th of September is a Saturday in 2014.

I have the frame horns "straightened", painted, and the front end put back together. Thanks to Lew for letting me use his shop and tools. I cut some 11ga steel sheet for reinforcement after the heating and bending, recessed them in to the frame and welded to the front member and frame.I'll take it home soon and start working on the rear quarter panel, which means the green jeep that was yellow after it was green will be there! ------------- BOULDER 48 2A |

smfulle, How does the schedule go? On a daily basis, something like this: about 6am I get up to make sure the coffee pot is turned on. Then take a quick shower and get dressed for the day. Go get a cup of coffee and chat with the other folks who have come in for a morning shower. (2 of 3 showers open to guests). Grab some breakfast and another cup of coffee.  Chat with the coffee lingerers until about 8am. Between 8 and 8:30 head for the shop to make sure it's open for anyone needing some morning maintenance. Swarm all around any jeep with it's hood up. Gotta see what the other guy's got! Make sure the oil's up, and the lug nuts are tight. (  ) About 8:55 we begin to line out along the driveway. Make sure every jeep has a driver and passenger. Water and lunches are packed. Radios are set to channel 3. Flip a coin to see if we go left or right out on the road. And head out for some high adventure! We'll be gone for most of the day, returning in the afternoon. If you are meaning from day to day what is the schedule, that varies from year to year. I'll put together a list of those roads I want to take the group on. With the smaller group early in the week I usually look at taking the rougher tougher roads. Then I go for easier smoother roads as the numbers of jeeps grow. I don't take any of our groups on Rubicon-style rock climbing routes. Just not my cup of tea. I have enough trouble (fun!) with my Blue Mule breaking down on these roads as it is!   And if I need to change up the schedule to help someone achieve a ride to a favored location while they are here I can do that. I just need to know ahead of time. Even with the rougher tougher roads early in the week, we don't aim to break any jeeps and the routes can be driven by any stock CJ2A without damage if the driver is paying attention. But every jeep on just about every road will get the 4WD tested.Whew!! That was a long winded answer for ya! I hope it helped. ------------- M38Mike 46 CJ2A SAMCJ2A 4?-5? Mike, Thanks for the schedule. I noticed that jpet pulled in there Sunday night last year. I was thinking i might be able to do something like that and then head out Thursday or Friday, depending on whether i decided to come back here to Ogden before heading to St. George, or straight over to St. George from The Thirsty Dirt Ranch. I just don't want to show up there too early and be a bother to you and your family. The fact that you are kind enough to make your showers available really makes camping a much more pleasant prospect. Still not sure if I can work out the logistics of this, but I really want to. Dave, I use both CB and FRS (Family Radio Service) radios. The CB's can really reach out so I like to have one in the back of the group to let me know if someone breaks down. But last year we did really well with the FRS radios, so I may just focus on them in the future. The FRS radios are the basic walkie talkies you can get from Walmart or Cabella's or online. What is nice about having the radios is that it allows us to pass information along while we're travelling. Things like wildlife sightings, rest stops, breakdowns, or simple questions all get handled in real time. Most of the FRS radios run on batteries. ------------- M38Mike 46 CJ2A SAMCJ2A 4?-5? man, I gotta figure out a way to be there, either this year or next year. I'm been through that area on a Harley, cant imagine how nice it would be off the beaten path in my 2a. This will be my first full year with it so I should be able to have any bugs worked out if there are any. Ok, a few questions. do I need or should I have a roll bar? I assume seat belts are a must? winch? skid plates? Tires, I have the military style set on it, change em tooooooooooooooo? thanks M38 Mike. what a great group here. I've done the Blue Ridge on my Harley and it was great and I have done 3 rides out west on the Harley hitting these states , South Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, Arizona, Colorado, Utah, and it was great. My Harley is fuel injected, how does the 2a handle the altitude changes since they are carbs? Ohio here with elevation range of 800 to 1200 msl. Those 3 trips out west on the Harley were all what I classify as "trip of a life time" rides and I am sure this tour would be just as great. How does a 2A with carb handle high elevations? They do great. I've taken the group up to 13,000 feet and every one made it on their own power. We shut them off for lunch break, and every one started back up without help. So don't mess with your carb, except to make sure it's clean inside. When you get to altitude, advancing the timing is helpful, you just don't want to go so far that the engine kicks back on starting. Then remember to put it back to spec when going back to Ohio. You do know that "sea level is for sissies". ------------- BOULDER 48 2A |

well, I'm sure Big Bird is more than capable of handling the tour. Pat T did a great restore of her. it's a little over 1400 miles one way, so two good days of towing. I've talked to my son to see if he wants to go and if not gonna check with a buddy. M38Mike, thanks for the invite. There usually are a few breakdowns on the trails so those that bring some tools have been much appreciated. I won't name him, but one particularly well-known participant did lose a rear wheel last year much to everyone's delight - other than him, of course. Jet, take a good look at your jeep and see if there are any small parts that you have not maintained or messed with in a long time. Those are the parts that may go out on the trail. To the extent you have money and space, bring parts to help you keep going. Although this year we're going to put together a Willys First Aid and Recovery Kit. We talked about it quite a bit last year and got some good ideas. The idea is that we will have a fairly complete kit to take with us into the mountains with parts and perhaps some tools to help us repair any malfunctions and keep all the Jeeps moving on their own. Once we get a broken Jeep back to the shop, then we can get serious about repairs. Last year we swapped out an alternator on one jeep and a leaf spring and crankshaft pully on another. And who knows how many fuel pumps and carbs got serviced?? So Jet, keep asking questions and keep making your plans. You're doing the right things to get ready for the adventure of your life! PS. I have it on very good authority that the wheel in question was only following the tire's advice. The jeeps were going too slow and both wheel and tire wanted to get up the mountain. Unfortunately for them, once they left the jeep behind they argued about the route and got sidetracked into the ditch. But they were zipping along when they did pass the jeep!! BTW, we'll be soliciting a donation of some right hand thread studs with lug nuts for this year's Willys first aid and recovery kit. I'm sure that all the usual suspects in the antique Jeep supplier market carry the gear to hold wheels on Jeeps. I feel pretty confident that I wont have a break down. I bought this from another member here and the workmanship and detail is amazing. everything has been gone through except for the shocks and leaf springs which I may replace prior to coming out. it has been converted to 12 volt so I may add a cigarette lighter plug for a compressor. The 5th rim is in plus the spare tire mount. I think I should add a grab bar for the pax seat ( my buddy is coming with me) just hate to mess up the inside like that but might be better than him falling out. lol. the current plan is to leave ohio on the 19th, arrive 21st. its a little over 1400 miles. figure doing 500 average a day. most likely returning on the 27th to get back home on the 29th. might modify that as time draws near but that's it now. ------------- 2010 2 door jk, 46 Willys aka "Big Bird". Let's see, the last time we had to add a tire to a jeep I think we just had 4 or 5 guys lift the jeep up to put the tire/wheel on the hub. Seems like the jeep had a jack that didn't work. If my memory is correct, I think the jeep now has a new scissor jack. A couple of the jeeps carry handyman jacks, some have scissor jacks, some have bottle jacks, and more than a few carry no jacks at all.  Thanks for letting me know your travel plans. I see, so you must be planning to ride in the back with those teenagers, jpet and Ricco. I guess you could just take a piece of rope and tie it around the seat frame, then around your rider, so your rider can't leave the seat behind. But then if my memory is working, we have seen a few seats go flying too. I suppose if you launch your passenger, and you're a really good driver, You could catch them again without missing a beat. ok, looks like im gonna jockey for a spot up front. If I get a flat i'll just look for the 5 strongest guys or borrow a jack. plan on camping at thirsty dirt in my home made toy hauler. need to take the shower out to get the CJ in but have generator, heat ac microwave and the all important COFFEE pot.

Excited to come to this for the first time. I've been working on a pickup camper so I can come for the full week and not be a burden on Mike's facilities! Amazing how Jeeps take you off on side ventures in preparation. Suspension upgrades, mirror changes, generators, different trailer jacks, One or two Jeeps, lots to think about. The test run for the equipment will be Bruce's Northern Run. In the mean time, I'll be studying what you guys do in June when you come North to the Black Hills. All new, all fun. John, we're looking forward to seeing you here! And speaking of other mods, I spent the weekend modding my F250 so it'll do a better job of towing for the jeep trips this year. I added an oversized high-flow air filter, a three-gauge set, a 4 inch, turbo-back exhaust, and a TS 6-function chip. WOW! What a difference those changes made! I did a 2 hour drive towing my 24 foot enclosed car hauler and talk about more power. Even going up and over a mountain pass I was able to accelerate and with the larger exhaust my EGT's stayed much lower than they ever did with the factory exhaust. Mike, if you are doing hats this year, I'll take two. If you are taking suggestions on colors, I'll vote for dark red maroon Luzon Red. That would match my Jeep I'm bringing. Got to be color coordinated right? I think you might get overwelmed this year. Probably need a lead and follow vehicle with yellow flashing lights . Maybe a follow me Jeep in the front? As I sit here contemplating about my fire gear, and is it ready to go, Your comments have inspired me to ask for a hat-count from folks who will want hats this year. I'll plan on buying extra, but it helps to have a base line number for the order coming from folks who want hats. This year's color was selected by a secret committee who were sworn to secrecy until the great unveiling later this summer. We've had a very fine smoke settled into the Black Hills from the fires way out west. You can't smell it, but definately see it. I'm not fond of that job. Watch yourself, stay out of the blowups. Jet, as bright as big bird is, you could spot it from space on Mount Princeton! You don't need a yellow fire fighting shirt either. I sure hope fall doesn't start like last year with 4 feet of snow on Oct. 3. Mike has had good luck allot of years now. Should be fun to meet all you guys for the first time there. A real Willys reunion that is done on the trail. The trail is where the fun is at to me. Don't try and keep up with Bruce W though. I think he practices ahead of time and knows every rock. LesBerg, This is a no-fee opportunity for you and everyone else. Your expenses are just what you need for food and fuel and lodging. If you camp out at the ranch, then lodging is free. We do accept donations, but don't ask for them. Only thing we charge for is the hats. If I charged to guide the tours, then I would need to get a Forest Service permit because I'd be making money using the Forest. Then they could influence/direct where I could take you all. If it's all free, then I can make all the decisions and we are free to go anywhere the road is open. I prefer that circumstance. gmcjr, we wish you could come back too. Stay tuned to see what you'll be missing. Hey Bruce, did you install your fuel line blow tube yet? Or did you get your tank cleaned out?? I can relate to you. I had the same problem with the Mule yesterday on our ride up in 4-Mile. I haven't done anything yet. I plan to siphon the fuel out thru a good-sized hose and run it thru a paint strainer.
