Worked on my Header design almost ready to pucker up and order materials.

Got the Skid plate on
finished hooking up Brake linkage and more done on the clutch linkage (waiting on some rod ends)
Made two Magnetic drain plugs that will fit into the Fill plugs on the Tranny and Transfer case. The transfer case is a HIGH temp 1/2" D x 1/4" long 5lb pull magnet that is recessed into the Brass plug held in place with JB Weld. The other is a normal temp range 1/2" D x 1" long 16+ Pull Magnet (the wife could not pull two of them apart) It sticks out of the Plug about 3/8" and will go in the Tranny fill.
Looking at making a brass extension for the Transfer case Drain plug so I can put the other 1" long magnet I have in there and still clear the gears and still be above the Skid plate.

The Tranny Drain plug has my Temp sending unit in it For my Gear box oil temp gauge.

I really appreciate the Willys vendors that keep us in jeep parts.  Without them, we'd be in a tough spot. Most are really helpful and conscientious.  But one frustrating thing I've run into is that it seems like every time I call to place an order, there is always one item on my list that they don't have in stock.  This is despite their website indicating they have it.  I know they can't keep every part in stock all the time and it is a lot of work to update their sites (unless its automated).  But it seems I've had a string of orders where this happens every time.  I guess its the nature of the business, but its a bit frustrating when you are working on a project and have to chase parts from multiple sources, one after another.

...sigh.... I feel better nowBig smile

Put the snow plow lift and lower mount on the 1946 - doing my part to insure there is not heavy snow here.  Took the carb apart cleaned the bowl and replaced the fuel line.

Put the NOS clicking throttle on the restored 1948 and adjusted the Novi governor linkage.  Jeep is up on jack stands for the winter.

I was gonna drive the Jeep to work this morning.

The plan was to put the heater in yesterday. It’s all tested and painted up. I picked up the hose, fittings, and valve last week. Still waiting on the switch.  I was going to get it all hooked up and drive a nice warm Jeep to work this morning.
However,  things didn’t work out as planned. I had a few chores to take care of first. While taking the trash in the truck started acting up. Trucks a diesel. I don’t know much about fixing diesels.  They say that most of the time it’s a fuel problem.  It was due an oil change. So, I did that. Then I changed out the air filter. The vacuum indicator was sucked in to yellow so I thought I had it. Nope that wasn’t it. Then I changed the fuel filter. That’s when I noticed that the electric pump that seems to always be running wasn’t. Evidently. The injector pump will suck enough fuel to kinda run. At least until you remove the filter and it loses its prime. I called around and you can’t buy a fuel pump for a 2001 7.3 Ford in Longview on Sunday.

So, I guess things worked out. I drove the Jeep to work this morning. 38 degrees. Light rain. About 16 miles. Defroster rag in one hand wheel in the other. It was just like going back in time 40 years.

After work I put the dowel pins and bolts in the crank. Nervously removed the rear cap to do so. After getting them in I install the oil pan.  I will not be surprised when it leaks oil later from the cap LOLConfusedOuch

I then JB welded around the air cleaned I will be using. It had a small hole in it.

NOT much today. But some progress.

I got to fixing my upper Starter bolt hole. I managed to get all but about 1/2 of one rotation of the 7/8" long Helicoil insert I bought from McMaster Carr. to seat in the hole. It got to hard to turn the tap and I have done a huge amount of hand threading over the years so I know when to give up before something makes me cry.

Funny thing is once I got the Hole fixed the Bolt wouldn't fit wouldn't line up. In the comments from other guys who have done the Toyota starter swap most mentioned having to open the top bolt hole in the Starter a little. SO I guess I would have to too. A few min with a nice rat tail file and she fits perfect. The old wallered out hole must have allowed the bolt to run at an angle.

I also made the shortest Brake hose possible its about 1/16" long then the two tube nuts and my double flaring tool would fit on the tubing. I am going to run my 10lb residual pressure valve right next to the Rear Brake Proportioning valve both have female 3/8-24 inverted flare connections. And NAPA couldn't find me a Male to Male connector so I had to make one.

I also got squirrelly and cleaned up the grinding/bandsaw room and all around the Milling machine and Drill press. Put a couple of hand fulls of tools back in the box and got ready for tomorrow when hopefully the majority of my flexable brake line stuff will arrive and I can get that all hooked up.

Then I went dress shopping with my 11 year old grand daughter who has a Jr High dance fri and wanted to spend some Christmas money on a new dress. She picked out a super simple Black dress she looks very cute in. And grandpa must have walked 4 miles inside that damn Target store following her around.

BUT then I took her out in the shop and showed her the progress on CHUG and she was excited she knows one day grandpa is going to teach her to drive in it. And she's actually interested in the project. This is the first time I have had enough assembled for her to actually figure it out. She's a very girl girl LOL.

My grandpa bought this 46 cj2a back in 52 or 53 something like that.  He drove it up until he died about 30-40 years ago.   The details are kind of scarce.   It had been sitting in the AZ desert for the last 3 decades.   My brother finally got a hold of it and here we are rebuilding it.   Awesome project. It's running and driving.  We completely rebuilt the motor, new valves, new pistons, etc.   Fired right up once we got the distributor in the correct position.   Hell of a feeling.   I'd say about its 80% complete now.   We lack installing the wiring harness, lights, seats, couple things here and there.  Next big hurdle is getting it registered and plated!  Some before and after pics below.   Still cant figure out why it rotates some of the pics when I upload them!

Got the heater and switch mounted. Then it got dark. I really need to build something for a shop.

The Jeep (halfway) had a heater in it before. It was removed by someone in the past. So the holes were all there.  The PO had covered them with what turned out to be sheet rubber glued to the firewall. It peeled right off. It still took a lot of trial and error to get the bolts to line up. Next chance I get I’ll plumb and wire it. Then on to the next little project. Probably the Ross box.

I been stuck in "How to make a Drill Jig" for my header flange. Since I want to be able to make more then one copy I need away to accurately reproduce them. A drill jig to locate the holes in exactly the correct place is going to be required. I love making things that can't be checked for fit until they are finished. Like brake lines LOL. Or drill jigs for something you can't accurately measure.

I'm closing in on it Got most the holes in the right place either one of three to go depending on if I go with a flip over design. Do one side then flip it over to do the other. That worked real well for the drill jig that I used when I repaired the Stud holes for the manifolds.

Yesterday afternoon I took my oldest grand daughter out for a driving lesson.  Her dad had her driving the suburban with an automatic and she did ok.  I brought "Eeyore" the '64 CJ5 for her to drive.  She was ready to jump in behind the wheel.  I opened the hood and we had a lesson on what was in there.
She did well driving and we will go again.
These kids sure grow up quickly.  I hope she will develop a love for Jeeps.

Finished all the port holes in my Header Flange (photos in my Project thread) and I made a neat little PITA round flange that will get welded on the end of the 1.75" to 2.25" 2 into 1 collector to attach the tailpipe. I made a mistake on it right towards the end of the process and ended up with the Weld channel on the outside instead of the inside. SO I guess I have to make a pretty weld as it will now show.

I see January’s post is titled “What did you do with your jeep today?” rather than what did you do to your jeep. Maybe it’s just a semantical difference. Anyway, tonight I picked up the front brakes from a small shop that was able to re-arch them to match the drums. It’s the same place that rebuilt my clutch disc and they are about a mile from where I live. It was only $10!
Turned out to be a good day. I have been waiting 18 years for the shoes to seat in! They were only contacting the drum on 1/3 of the shoe at most.

This morning I rearranged the back yard a little to have a place to put the parts Jeeps I bought.

Mike F from the page here has been trying to help me out by searching for a trailer and offering his time so I can bring them home. He is having no luck either. Unfortunately not having my own trailer is making it difficult getting them from the sellers house to mine.

Dennis, You can rent one for one day fairly cheaply. I have one you could borrow, but the trip to pick it up & return it is a bit far. If my brother in Beaverton still has his, would it work for you, or is that still too far? I would vouch for you with him.

It was a nice day in Reno. I wanted to go out in the hills and do some plinking.

I went over to mom’s house to get the Jeep. The Jeep had been there since November. I pulled the battery already and had it all charged up. She wouldn’t crank. Had to jump it. Got her going but she wasn’t charging. Drove her over to my house.

I cleaned all the terminals and she cranked over on her own. I made sure the diode to the alternator was working. All was good. Pulled the alternator and had it tested. Dead. Under warranty but not in stock. Had to go to another store.

Got it in and she is charging. That killed the whole day. Having a cup of coffee now. I have to go cover her up since tomorrow we have rain and snow forcast.

I miss driving my Jeep. Maybe next weekend but the highs are only in the 40s. It was near 60 today.

Damn.

Micah

Well because I couldn’t find a trailer to go help Dennis. I went ahead and did most of the plumbing for the heater install. Right up to the last fitting at the water pump. Only thing I could find at the time time was a straight one. Straight won’t work it hits the oil filter bracket. I found a 45 and it will be here Monday.
After I hit the wall on the plumbing I went on to put the new choke and throttle cables in and then put all the grommets in to seal up firewall
Woulda been a good day to move Jeeps. More fun than trying to get to stuff under the dash.

Got the heater plumbed up yesterday. It was after dark when I finished. Warmed it up and took it out for a ride. Got to the end of the gravel road. The wipers won’t come on. Decided I better turn around and figure it out. When I did the head lights quit. And the alternator ain’t alternating. Wirings a mess.  It was on the list. Looks like it’s moving up. But the heater works great. So there’s that. And the lights started working again.
Tonight I fixed the wipers. I had knocked the wires off the switch when I was under the dash running the heater wire. Tried my ride again. Now the motors cutting out.

I worked on my header some more. Nothing worth looking at it looks pretty much the same as it has for the last couple days. But its now Welded to the 4 in line flange and feels like a solid piece. It won't be until I weld the main flange on which will wait a while as I can move the bottom of the tubes a little and I might need to when lining things up down steam.

More details in the Project thread.

With the help of a co-worker, I brought one of the two CJ2A's I bought a few days ago home. Big smile

When I was much younger a friend of mine had a party at his house.  He has a big hill in his back yard and it was winter, so we were told to bring sleds.  As the party went on (no alcohol involved, honestly!) it seemed like it might be a good idea to bring out his cheap plastic Coleman canoe and slide down the hill in that.

We decided that was white-water canoeing!

Sounds like you're right, your wiring is suspect, but, whenever my headlights quit, I stomp on the high beam switch a few times. The internal contacts can corrode and intermittently cut power to the lights. Yes, cuts power to high and low beams. The high beam switch is just as unreliable as the repro starter switches.

Me and another flat fender guy went for a 1.5 hour patrol around the area this morning. It was about 22 degrees. We were pretty comfortable, except one hand. My mitten had a cut in it that let in the cold air. So after I got home I sewed a patch on it using my 103 year old treadle cobbler's sewing machine. Problem solved.

That would explain why they they just started working again. I had just spent an hour cramming myself under the dash changing out the throttle and choke cables.
I’ll assume your right on this and go on to figuring out why I’m not charging anymore

EDIT. Turns out you hit the nail on the head Joe. It’s the dimmer switch

Fired her up this afternoon. Last week she would not idle and I had to replace the alternator. Must have been some junk in the carb after sitting a couple months. Revved her up a few times seems to have blown it out. Readjusted idle and mixture.

Took her to Auto Zone to get radiator sealant. The crack above the distributor has been dripping a bit more lately. Filled the tank with fresh gas.

The handbrake stopped working a while back. The lever would not pull back. Everything at the drum is new. Figured the ratchet was rusty or had junk in it. Pulled it out and it was fine. Cable seized. Pulled it out. Seized so much that even pulling on it with pliers couldn’t get it to move. I did not like the prospect of replacing it. So, I massaged the housing back and forth for a few minutes and got it to move. With some oil and more massaging, I got it all freed up. Put it back in, put some grease on the ratchet and it works better than ever.

Tomorrow, if the weather holds out, I’m going to take her up in the hills to do some plinking with the .22.

Me and a buddy were driving around yesterday in our jeeps. 22 degrees out, but it was fun. But he tells me that my brakes lights are flickering, sometimes the work, sometimes not. 9 months ago I installed a new master cylinder, brake light switch and new wiring. I'm suspecting the switch has gone bad. I see a lot of people have trouble with these. I'll verify it today. I'm thinking about going with a mechanical switch instead. Has anyone else done this?

Yes.  I used a lever type switch from a '50's chevy.  Bolted it to the master cyl. cover plate on the floor.  With the brake pedal up the switch is open, push the brake pedal down and the switch closes and the brake lights come on.  It took some adjustment when first installed but has worked well.

Well, it was supposed to be an outing to go do some plinking. Turned into playing in the mud. Got a friend to bring out his newer Jeep. So, I felt comfortable to take her out for her longest off road outing. Didn't do much plinking.

Only had one issue. I hit a deep hole in the mudhole. Next thing it sounds like my clutch exploded. Got it out of the hole and to the side of the path. Fan shroud extension was pushed into the blade. How the hell did that happen? Bent it back but it still made noise the whole way back. Need to get under the hood and figure out what happened.

Scraped about 40 pounds off mud of her. No gas in the pressure washer. Great. Spent the next hour trying to wash away another 40 pounds.

That was fun. I need to do that again. Next time, I'll remember to get gas for the pressure washer.

It took me only four tries to get a picture to post right side up. Wow

Cut down and removed a dead tree.   It might have fallen on road in front of our house one day, so removed for safety,  and this yellow pine makes decent "starter" firewood.

GOT MY TITLE!

My 47 came with title problems. Took 3 months, but I've got 'em resolved.  Obviously, I didn't want to spend a bunch of money on a vehicle I might not be able to title...

So...  On with the project :)

Unfortunately... high temps this week around 15f.  Doubt I'll be out in the shop much :D

Yesterday, I decided to take a look at my PTO gearbox on the 3B and discovered that instead of gear oil, it was full of water. Drained that and now I'm planning on taking it apart over the next few weeks.

I've been rebuilding another GDZ 4817a generator. The armature has been serviced, field coils rewrapped and rewired, lots of little things done. Waiting on a new commutator end bronze bushing and a set if NOS Autolite brushes to arrive.

It was like -7 out yesterday, no jeep driving!

I am rebuilding the t90 on my Empire tractor using the Rick Stivers guide. Here it is so far.

I packed the bearings then had to remove them all to shorten the internal spacer just a bit.

Looking good Bob!  Do you have a photo of this Empire tractor? I'm curious :-)

Here you go, this is a 1947 model 90, or "88-90" as the tag says. This one is very rare as it has the Love three point lift on the back, about a dozen or so are known to exist. Has the L head 134, the t90 and the dana 18 xfer case with no 4wd output.
