While I am sure that most veterans appreciate a thank you from the public, let's not confuse Memorial Day with Veteran's Day. Veteran's Day celebrates the veteran's service to their country and is a holiday near and dear to almost every veteran. Memorial Day is the day we remember those service men and women that were not as fortunate as the rest of us. They didn't make it back alive... They served in all the wars that this country has fought, from the American Revolution to the War on Terrorism today. Today, Memorial Day for some is a trip to the local cemetery to put flowers on the grave of Uncle John who was killed on some island in the Pacific during World War II. For others, it is a time to get together with family and friends and enjoy the companionship during a barbecue. It is the unofficial start of the vacation season. Commercial establishments use the day to have sales events. It's all good. This is America, where everyone can celebrate the day as they choose. That is what most of those Soldiers, Marines, Sailors, Airmen, and Coast Guardsmen who didn't make it home would have us do and is the reason they served...so that we could have the freedom to celebrate Memorial Day in any fashion we choose. To all, On Saturday, 25May19, I had the honor of driving the Grand Marshal in the Boatnik Parade in Grants Pass, Oregon. The Grand Marshall Luther Gerren, age 94, a USMC combat veteran who participated in the Pacific Theater of Operations. He was assigned to Amphibious Tractors Battalions during his service.. Luther served with both the Third Marine and Fifth Marine Divisions. Campaigns included Bougainville, Guam where he was awarded the Bronze Star, and Iwo Jima. Here’s a link about my Great Great Uncle who lost his life October 27, 1918 in the Great War, just a few days before the Armistice was signed. There is a typed copy of his last letter home and a copy of the letter his CO sent to his mother informing her of his death. His body lay in France for 3 years before he was brought back home to Kansas for his final resting place. Reading his letters, somehow connected me to him; made him real to me, across the century that he’s been gone. Thanks for sharing with us Rick. I lost a Great Uncle in France in WW1. I do not have much info about him. John Hawkins Carter was bigger than life to my Dad. Hawkins was returned to Winfield, Cowley County, Kansas for final internment. We all lose to much family history over the years.
