CJ5 with a rear mount Koenig winch still mounted to the jeep. Intact and in place from the PTO unit to the winch. Trying to remove it all from the jeep.

Problem: The (recessed allen head) set screws which hold the rear u-joint to the driven pto shaft and to the shaft that goes through the winch are both stuck. I've soaked with the ATF/acetone mix, heated them, and destroyed two allen head sockets.....and thusly the set screws themselves. I tried left handed drill bits and standard twist drill bits. I've managed to remove hollow part of one set screw (where the hex socket goes in) but, as the drill bit reaches the solid part of the set screw, all progress ends.

Looking for your suggestions. I'm thinking of carbide drill bits next despite their expense. The set screws are either hardened steel or now hardened from my attempts to drill them, even though I drilled slowly and with oil.

I really am trying to avoid cutting the shaft. I'd likely have to cut the shaft on the winch so I could get the winch off the jeep as the U joint is obviously to big to fit through the hole in the cross member.

What say ye'?

Does the set screw sit on top of the woodruff key? If so, sometimes you can use a drift to wack the set screw down, break the threads on the set screw and/or threaded hole, and then it will be loose enough to hammer the joint off the shaft. If the set screw is down into a recess in the shaft, that probably won't work. Depending on how many threads you have left, it may not work anyway. I think the carbide drill may be your only way out.

Are the yokes like the generic ones used on many PTO applications? If so, sacrifice the yoke and just replace it.

Yoke has been sacrificed to the Great Grinder God and his cut off wheel.

I cut the yoke end attached to the shaft that goes through the Koening winch. This way I will be able to slip the winch off the frame and out of the pass through hole in the rear cross member.

Thanks folks.
