I put new brake drums on the rear axle, these drums go over the front of the hub. I noticed that the drum is not hub centric or lug centric, is there wheel studs or bushings that should be used? This makes adjusting the brakes difficult and will probably cause vibrations and premature wear of the pads. Here's a picture

Those are later hubs that are found on Dana 44s in the early 1950 - 197?.  My guess is that the Dana 44 axles hub is different and would have had a center flange that would line up the center of the brake drum to the hub.

Do your backing plates have 2 or 4 adjusting cams?  Those style drums I think belong on the style with 2 adjusting cams.

Someone will have to give a definitive answer.

I have 4 adjusting cams on the brakes, I bought these type drums so that I don't have to pull the hubs to check the brakes

I see you have three additional holes in the drum.  Perhaps there are three drilled and tapped holes in the hub/flang that are used to center the drum.  Take a look.

The backing plate is from a Dana 41 or an early Dana 44 if it has 4 adjusting cams.

You might have to source different hubs that center the drum.

The wheel stud holes in the drum don't appear to be going over the wheel studs.
Is there swaging material left over on the stud shoulder preventing the drum from seating
fully on the hub ? Did you cut or press the old drums off ?
I'm sure you could update the wheel studs to non swage type or install studs with a shorter
shoulder that won't interfere.

I pressed the studs off of the hub and drum, I used a lug nut to center the lugs with the drum and I adjusted the brakes but when I take the lug nut off it moves. The drum does seat flat to the hub. I'll look up non swage type studs.

Would it be possible to center the drums using the lug nuts then drill and tap the hub to accept some screws in those 3 holes?

In my opinion, the three holes aren't really needed. The wheel will hold the drum to the hub.
The important part is to get the drum centered over the studs and the hub.

I'd find an M-38 hub or whichever one with the three holes for the screws will work and use them to center the drum.  Trying to get and keep the drum centered and then trying to get the lug nuts tightened without losing your center would be pretty difficult, I would think.

I can put 3 lug nuts on the brake drum and that centers it up, then I was thinking about drilling and tapping the three holes and put in some screws. That will probably be the easiest thing to do.

If you can guarantee that you can get the three holes located properly, that is your best bet.  I could probably get two right but I'm pretty sure the third would walk on me in some way...Cry

I ended up drilling the hubs so everything lines up now, thanks for all the replies!
