I have decided to put a full roll cage into my Jeep, I need a little more protection for the off-roading that I do. I am going to put a cage in that looks factory, and will be hard to detect. I will be tying it to the frame for extra support and adding 4 point harnesses to it as well. I am going to sorta copy RickG and AKoller's design-I think it looks good and should add a little more protection. Here is a couple of pictures of the progress so far.

Here is the reason I need more protection, I am in Colorado and Moab quite a bit:

I ended up buying a Rogue Fab bender, it will do anything I want to ever bend up:

I bought 4 sticks of 1 1/2 .120 wall tubing and it begins! First, out with the roll bar. I have never seen my Jeep without a roll bar, I kinda like it!

I started by bending up the front hoop. This is the first time building a cage so it will be a leaning experience

Started bending up the main hoop and adding cross supports
:

Added a harness bar with Shay testing the angle of the belts:

Got it all welded up and trying to decide what to do in the the middle between the supports. X-brace, 2 more strait bars, Y-brace? haven't decided yet. What do you think will look/work the best?

Looks good. If it was mine I would probley go with two straight peices over head and maybe a diagonal tube from the top of the middle bar back to the bottom of the back bar just in case of a endo accedent.

Wow!
Great job on the cage.
I also think straight bars look better, to me an x or Y give a more modern look… if that makes any sense?

According to NHRA and SCCA Your harness bar should be 4-6” below your shoulder. Other than that NEVER let the world know you have a tube bender! You will be asked to do “just a couple bends” by “Friends” you haven’t seen since the 2nd grade. The bars do look great, keep it up

Looks great, Kevin - nice work.  Fun seeing you in July and sorry I didn't remember at FCT!

I need to build a roll bar too - thanks for sharing your work.

Looks good, Kevin.  Looking forward to see how you’re going to tie into the frame.

I'd like to see a pic of that '59, too. Nice work on the cage.

While waiting for the '59 reveal...
On the front hoop one of the things that's a problem is getting my feet out because the bar takes a couple of inches from the opening.  Would it be acceptable to put a bend towards the firewall just below the dash?  That would get it out of the door opening but is there a structure problem if a bend is put there?

I bent my old flatfender cage in that fashion. It does create a potential weakness. But in my case - it was never an issue. That cage survived multiple rollovers with no damage to that area.

There is a lot of cage theory out there. Most Jeep rollovers are relatively low speed that doesn’t create the force of a highway speed incident.

Sorry no updates on the roll cage. A couple of people wanted some pictures of the ‘59, so here is the story and a couple of pictures

I bought the car from the original owner, he got it as a high school graduation present in 1959. I have a ton of old pictures of the car and even have the original sales receipt and title. The car was originally a 348 tri-power 4 speed, now it has a 427 tri-power turbo 400. I did a complete frame off restoration on it that took about 4 years. It’s a fun car that gets a ton of attention when we take it out.

High school (this was 1976) friend had a four door 59. We called it the Batmobile.

My first "hot rod" was something similar to your 59.  A 1960 El Camino.  It had the 348 tripower and a T10.  It was my first and last experiment with a 12:1 CR in anything with 4 wheels.  The only photo I ever found of it.

Very nice 59!  Your cage is very similar to what I am considering for my build.  I have been reading a lot on this site and others' about cage building.  Most posts indicate that 1.75" is the minimum tube diameter size, with DOM being strongly suggested, or advised.  I am not an engineer, but it is my guess that a "properly" fabricated 1.5" cage would give good protection in a low speed flop (like JPET's), or single roll in a CJ.  I would also like to use 1.5".  I'm curious if others are running 1.5" and if they are using DOM, or not.  Are you using DOM?  I'll be following your build.  Nice Job.
