Wouldn’t you know it? Less than one week to departure and Gus starts making a noise. A little clicking noise deep within the underbelly. Hmmm. Better see what it is.

@Stev: Sorry to hear you won't make it. Enjoy your time on the new property.
@Rick: You're making me feel better about my Jeep! All jokes aside, I hope you figure out the issue and get it repaired quick.

That Tamarack fire looks like it’s getting quite close to the Rubicon. What do the people that live close think about that? Is our trip going to be canceled?

I don’t think the Tamarack fire will impact the Rubicon trail, but it does impact my travel route. I go right thru the heart of that fire (Markleeville) on the road that’s closed. I’ll have to change my travel plan. Last time we did the Rubicon, , Most of Northern California was burning. Ugghhh!

Sorry, you can’t make it Stev. I was looming forward to wheeling with you.
I’m pretty much on schedule. Truck is ready, Jeep is ready. Got all my chow ready. This year, I’m going to utilize my HD fenders and move more weight to the front. ... I debated on if so should take a spare tire. I have everything I need to fix one unless, I tore an outright hole in it . I really don’t like that much weight. I’ll probably take less gas too since my tank is 14 gallon. About all I have left is to inspect the trailer and load it. Edited by jpet - 19 July 2021 at 9:58am |

Looking good Jeff. Good idea about moving more weight forward, I will take a re-look at mine. Is that the war department making sure everything is set and ready to go and making sure you have no excuse to stay home.

I guess I'm as ready as a hardly tested project jeep can be. Washed it and changed the oil yesterday, just need to check the rest of the fluids.

Ahhhh, no worries on the clicking sound. Just a twig in the propeller shaft. Now, if I can just remember what I did with that thingamajig for the clutch thingy…

Ok ok. I was just messing with y’all. I did not tear Gus completely apart just to find a twig. That pic was taken back in June when I completely replaced the transmission, which WAS making a clunking noise, and popping out of 1st & 2nd gears. I have been crippling along with it for about a year and decided it needed to be fixed before the Rubicon. It runs and shifts very smooth now! Anyways, I think I’m all ready for one more Rubicon adventure.
I’m bringing the following spare parts and tools: 30 spline D44 full floating rear axles (1) short side D25 axle Driving flanges Lock-out hubs Spindle Front driveshaft Rear driveshaft Yokes front leaf spring Tie rod ends U joints axle u bolts Coil & resistor Points & condenser Various wire and connectors Fan belt Electronic distributor Clutch rod Brake rod Hose splice Various nuts & bolts 4 qts 10w-40 3 qts Gl-1 gear oil 1 qt brake fluid RTV Zip ties Various hand tools, wrenches, sockets, ratchets, pliers, hammers Snap ring pliers Impact wrenches Yoke puller Pickle fork Folding shovel Hatchet Hack saw Dwell meter 12V drop light Ratchet straps Empty coffee can for catching fluids There’s more stuff that I’ve already loaded up, but just can’t remember it now. A lot of this stuff stays in the jeep anyway. I like to be prepared. However, I’m NOT bringing a hi-lift jack this trip. Here’s Gus mostly packed and ready to be loaded in the trailer. Got all the above mentioned items in the box. The black bag is my backpack loaded with sleeping bag, sleeping pad, pillow, clothes, medicine, personal items, etc. Got a hard cooler and a cooler bag, my easy chair, and finally my 5 gallon gas can. I’m ready to go! Just gotta figure out how best to get around the Tamarack forest fire and road closures now. See ya’ll in less than a week!!!
