35-20 Starting Crank

640751 crank starting assembley Group
(640752) crank handle end
(640753) crank jaw end

Steve Dunlop's website: shows a handle with home made bracket used to store handle in the bow storage area... This handle is more like the MB handle but in two pieces
The handle end will be mildly swedged open with a square hole to receive the jaw end. The flare of this swedge is very subtle, as appears in the above pics. The part number "W.O.-640752" is lightly stamped into the handle end where the horizontal center section begins to bend into the lower 90 degree bend.
The jaw end should have a dull tipped point with four distinct flat sides that fits into the handle end. When locating the part number "W.O.-640753" look in the middle of its length, that is where it is stamped.

The "keeper tab" was added later to the above handle. The proper place for storing the crank handle is in the under seat tool box.

Some MB crank nuts that the handle fits in to.

the one piece hand crank is MB/GPW---WWII era

the 2-piece is the CJ2A version....

there are no "mounting tabs" on them, that is the reason for the 2-piece design, so it could be placed in the tool box under the passenger seat....

So the correct place to store the original starting crank is in the tool bin, but the aftermarket ones are way too big to store there.  What is the next most appropriate place to store them?  I have seen a "mounting tab" on one site, but that is the extent of what I can find.  Any suggestions or recommendations?

P.S.  I have half of an original (engine side).  If someone has a crank side I might be willing to trade/purchase it from you, OR I would probably be willing to trade for it or maybe sell it.

I believe there were 2 original versions, single piece and 2 piece. The 2 piece version was supposed to be stored in the tool box. I have also seen pictures of a mounting tab for the one piece version, but I don’t know where that is supposed to be attached.

I am looking for a complete 2 piece hand crank, but your half of it may be a good starting point. Please let me know how much do you ask for it.

Thank you,

Fabricio

The one piece ones were for the GPW’s and MB’s and were stored behind the rear seat with a clamp held on with a wing nut.  When the CJ’s came out with a tailgate and there was no place to store that crank so they must have thought “let’s cut the crank in half and store it in the toolbox under the passenger seat.”

That connection between the two halves of the CJ’s crank is more difficult to make so most repro companies are making the one piece ones these days.

Here’s a pic of the military storage:

I have one of those in my tool box but I haven’t even tried using it. I might be ok for an emergency but the quality was pretty sad and not up to the standards of his other parts, I think that’s why he didn’t offer them very long.

I think I’ve figured out how to make the male and female receiver part to connect both of these parts together, but I don’t have a good way (since I have no lathe or mill) to make the crank nut connector.  If anyone has a good way to make that let me know.

I may just buy a repro one piece and cut it in half.  If I start this project, I’ll post up.

why does the joint need to be like the original. it does not seem to be a good design.

What about something like a course thread/sleeve? threaded so it tightens as you turn clockwise? maybe with a flattened surface on the handle side so that if it became too tight, it could be separated with a wrench? that would be very simple.

Your idea would work if it would fit through the hole in the bumper. If you weren't concerned about it looking original you could use a 3/4" socket wrench extension and use each end of it for a joint to join the 2 pieces.

There are a lot of things about our jeeps that don’t seem like a good design today, but at the time it was designed and made, it worked and was cheap to manufacture. And there are a lot of us who want these things to be the way they were.

While Joe D. is definitely a talented individual, and I don’t know what all of his talents are, that looks more like a job for a blacksmith rather than a machinist.

If you want to design a better crank, have at it. Let us know how it works out.

is there three markets, probably all small? one wanting original parts, one wanting original like parts, and one wanting something they can 1. get at reasonable price and 2. actually use.

regarding the original parts wanting group, there is a finite supply and being original, are no longer made. so surmising there are no original "NOS" available, trade or buying from an individual would be primary means to obtain one.

for the wanting original like part group, these seem to not be made, and the primary complication is the joint design. i fully understand the lore aspect here and respect that. either way, it seems they are not being made.

for those wanting one that is good quality and usable, there would certainly be a much improved, simpler, and manufacture friendly and cost effective design to provide units to those that want them to use in case of actual need.

i know the battery issue so no need to discuss. batteries, even well maintained ones can die at a bad time. can you push start? yes, but not always like if you are stuck in a field.

and reality strikes that if only 2 or 3 people want one of any type, they may just have to wait years to get one, or get lucky.

thanks for the input.
