Well, I guess that depends on the hill. BW

Steep hill (paved surface) = second gear, slow.... I have never had to completely stop mid-hill to downshift to first.

I drove mine up Pikes Peak a few years back, I was able to maintain the posted speed limit!

I guess I should have been a little more specific. If your cruising along at say 45-50 mph (3rd gear obviously) and come to a long uphill grade what speed are you dropping down to. I can stay in 3rd unless the hill is very steep but I am down to about 30-35mph.

I think to get meaningful answers you would also have to define the steepness of the hill. What is the grade?
Otherwise all you are going to get are anecdotal answers that may or may not relate to your experience. Just sayin'...

My last daily driver Jeep was a strong running (standard) F-134.
Was set up with 5.38's and 25% O.D. On the interstate I like to cruise it about 63 MPH. When I got to some fairly steep interstate grades here in Mo. I was lucky to maintain 55 MPH at best. I'm talking I-44 just west of Rolla, Mo where I-44 grades are at their steepest here in Missouri. Not sure of the specific grade but its well below 5% and not like climbing mount Monteagle over in east TN.

I think you're about as good as you're gonna get with 30-35 mph on a 6% grade, if it's a long one. A normal Go-Devil just hasn't got the guts to do a lot more.

In Connecticut, maybe. Probably not in Colorado.
But, you see, there's another variable. BW

If its running smooth and not studdering or smoking going up the hill, thats probably what the engine has in it. If its doing the above then maybe you should investigate.

Within the next 6 months I plan to have finished my project and be using the 2A to get to work and back. I only live about 10km from work.... but there is a big elevation difference, 500m, with one monster hill. Average grade on the hill works out to about 9%, but the steepest parts are 16-17%. So this thread is not making good reading for me

Yea well that makes sense. A normal L-134 should be able to lug down to 2000 RPM on a steep grade. 2000 RPM is the crankshaft velocity yielding maximum torque output for the Go Devils. At higher than 2000 RPM's the max torque output falls off slowly. At lower than 2000 RPM's the max torque falls of more quickly. On steep grades when RPM drops below 2000 RPM (31 MPH for the standard drivetrain) it's then time to to drop down into 2nd gear to get the RPM up and keep the torque output from falling off as the demand for HP increases. It's often referred to as the engine POWER BAND.

Thanks guys I just wanted to make sure. She only has 15,500 miles, I checked compression 110 on all 4 I checked this three times (because I didn't believe it) with my old and brand new screw on snap-on compression tester. Previous owner messed up a few things so I had to fix a lot of stuff, just wanted to make sure I didn't do something wrong but she runs beautiful and no smoke.

My CJ3A has the 4L-134 , 5.38:1 axle gears and 6.00X16 NDT tires. Going north on Arizona Interstate 17 on the way to Sunset point is a 6% grade, 6 mile long hill with a beginning elevation of about (I'm guessing) 2,000 feet. I'm in 2nd gear on the hill. If it's :cool" enough (below 110F/43C) I can do about 35 mph and keep the engine engine temperature below about 245F. If it's hotter than that, I'll slow down to about 30mph. |
