A Bantam followed me home today. S/N 6328, 1947 as far as I know. Unfortunately it has been named Rusty by my son. Quite a bit of work to do when I get going. This'll be my first restoration, I hope I'm not to old to learn a few skills as I go.

Mark,
Nice find, and thanks for the PM. Could you get some close ups for me of the reflectors and the dataplate.
I'm on Vacation the next two weeks but will get you updated on the database when I return.

Mark,
You got it, good for you, looks good, most of the "difficult" parts to find are still there. (even solid rims). Now the fun starts. |

Got to work on the hitch last night, removing what I could. All the nuts were rusted away far enough they fell off with a couple taps. The "leg" is stuck in the down position. I was able to remove the assembly and get it on the bench to get a better look. Can the pin that holds the leg up or down be removed? I see a small set screw but haven't touched it yet, figured I'd soak it a bit first.

I didn't fool with the lock pin in mine, from what I could tell looking at it, the bent part is a smaller diameter than the lock pin itself, and the set screw seems to be some sort of stop. It appears that the pin was originally installed as a straight piece from the right side of the trailer, and then bent over after it was installed. I didn't have a lot of confidence in bending the lever straight, pulling it out, cleaning and reinstall/bend it, so I left it alone. I couldn't see any other way this part could have been originally installed. (PS if you need a bolt list for your trailer let me know, I made one up when I disassembled mine).

Go to the "Focus on Trailers" section at www.jeepdraw.com for photos/discussion on repairing/replacing the lock pin for the landing leg.
As for your Bantam T3-C #6328 being a 1947, I think it is actually a 1946.
My Bantam T3-C, #9466, has documentation showing a clean chain of title back to the original California pink slip, which indicates both the model year and year first sold as 1946. When I had my 1946 California trailer plate ('45 "TLR" plate with '46 metal tab) assigned to my trailer, the California DMV made me jump through hoops to prove that my T3-C was in fact a 1946 trailer. In order to do that, I had to provide the California DMV with the original pink slip (not a photocopy) and documentation proving that 1946 was the earliest that Bantam distributed T3-C trailers to the civilian market.
Since there were no 1945 Bantam civilian trailers, and #9466 has now been officially confirmed by the California DMV as a 1946, your trailer #6328 must necessarily also be a 1946. Edited by Robert Bills - 08 July 2009 at 7:28pm |

Robert, where in the "Focus on Trailers" is that located, I've spent a bunch of time wandering around there and have never seen it (that doesn't mean anything, I miss stuff all the time) I'd love to see that to confirm my concept of how they're constructed. (and for future reference if I have to pull that assembly apart) Also, is there information somewhere that shows that there were no T3-C's produced or sold in 45? That's a new one to me, but I may have been making an assumption.(wouldn't be the first time)
Thanks. Edited by bkreutz - 08 July 2009 at 7:41pm |

I haven't looked there in awhile, but it was there the last time I looked. If you email Jon Rogers at jeepdraw.com, he has exact drawings of many of the parts at a very nominal cost.
I found an article by two members of the American Bantam Car Club that states civilian trailer production began in 1946. There are several other sources on the Internet that discuss the end of the military contracts for 1/4 ton trailers in late 1945, the date the war ended in late 1945, and surmize that civilian sales could not possibly have begun until 1946, with the possible exception of the first few hundred built with leftover parts from the military contracts. Also, the earliest known Bantam T3-C sales literature and price lists are dated in 1946.

Thanks for the info Bill and Gale. I did find the discussion on Jeep Draw at http://jeepdraw.com/Willys_MBT.html The discussion starts with the Oct 7, 2002 entry. Thanks also for the info on the year of the trailer, I was relying on what the PO was told. As with most of the older rigs, it could very well have been when it was titled, not manufactured.
Looks like I may be rebuilding the locking pin assembly, we'll see how that goes. Mark |

Mark,
It's dead set easy to make. I made mine before I got my lathe, so I drilled that hole to take the handle in a pedestal drill. JR |

No apologies necessary, this has all shown me the rusty way to proceed. After seeing the picture of the pin I would agree with JR, it would seem an easy part to make. I can't believe I actually typed the word "make" thinking I will do this, I guess this would be one the new skills I mentioned in my first post.

Well, I did make a little progress on the Bantam including a trip to the blaster on 60+ year old tires. It was their last trip anywhere as the sidewalls couldn't handle having air put in the tire. Good thing the trailer is so light, I'll be bringing a pair of tires off the cj to pick it up tomorrow assuming they fit (I know I read somewhere here that they will). The bed and springs have been ordered, tailgate hinges to buy when I make it to Gale's hinge outlet and wheels will get cleaned up next. I'll probably need that bolt list in a month or so from you Gale, if you wouldn't mind.

Mark,
PM me your email address and I'll send you the list (it's in MS Word format so it would be easier to attach it to an email) Gale |

Mark,
Could you take your wheel or a hub into a paint store and have them scan that color.
Thats the first original color in that good of shape that I have seen.
Love to know the color or paint code as mine was a green one as well.

Absolutely Art. That was the side with what looked like the original Firestone tire, it looked absolutely untouched and judging by how tough it was to remove, it hadn't been off for a long time.
The Bantam made it back from the blaster and the fun I have in store was completely revealed. Edited by mjohnson - 25 July 2009 at 6:12am |

When I took my combat wheels apart - there was plenty of original green. The paint store said they need a 1 inch square of a chip to scan.
