Well the Rat patrol has a new brother, a 1953 CJ3A - looks like serial # 453-GB1 11266, a fairly early '53. Picking it up tomorrow. Clear title, "new" 10 year old 7.50-16 tires with zero miles, PTO drum winch, cool vintage tow bar, bunch of extra parts (new & used), newish fuel tank, has new drums & brake shoes in boxes, new shocks in boxes, brand new leaf springs & shackles installed, Grill guard screen, fenders look nice, radiator, shroud & seat frames are there -- Engine missing, looks like what came out of it was an F head from the hole in the hood. It was 12-volted at some point, I saw an alternator in the big pile of parts. Underneath is in average shape from what I can tell - some rust but not as bad as my '47. Frame horns are surprisingly nice. Has a passenger side heater, a draw bar on the back I'm sure transmission is full of water as it sat in his driveway with no top. We will see. The PTO control moved & the drum turned easily. Did not try transfer case levers. Will need a wire harness, new brake lines, hoses, probably master & wheel cylinders. Looking underneath it appears that the transmission, transfer, & PTO are untouched from the thick coating of greasy dirt on them. The old Hobart welder I bought last month with the RUNNING L134 will come in handy. Can't wait to start on it, but the wife says home repairs come first (this is TBD, but don't tell her that) More pics to follow tomorrow, but as it's a CJ3A - should I move my blog to the CJ3A page?

You're finding some great stuff! I think I'll run tires that size on my 3A.

Thanks - I just went on a whim to look at it. The description in the ad was not great. Yeah, the tires look good, but I am a little concerned with power loss. They are a lot taller than the stock 6.00-16's. I'm sure there is a ton of info on tire sizes discussed here.

My friend Doug ONeil's MB runs 7:00 16 tires, with the wartime 4:88 axles. I haven't run the numbers but my gut tells me a 7:50 tire with 5:38 gears can't be too different than a 7:00 with 4:88s.
I had the honor of jeeping with him for two weeks last August in the MVPA Northwest Parks convoy. He had no problem turning those tires at highway speeds. We spent two nights camping at the Sisters High School. |

I'm thinking the bigger risk might be in breaking an axle shaft on our stock axles, unless we're careful. That's a lot more spinning weight.

Nice find, look forward to seeing the buildout as there is quite a bit of useful information to pick-up from the posts. Hopefully see you rolling one of them around Salem someday and pick your mind a bit.

Minimal progress on the Black Beauty, just degeased & primed a few parts.
Last year I started a piggy bank for an overdrive to go in the Rat Patrol. Selling off some leftover junk on Ebay - I'm 1/2way there! Just crossed the $500 mark. I loosly bolted the fenders, hood, & seats onto Black beauty.... I plan on using this "Black Beauty" font for it's name & possibly the horse on the side.... I’m digging the pink seats!
That’s quite a score really and looks pretty solid. Was the Black Beauty originally black? That’s kind of a rare color. Do 3a’s have numbers on the tailgate and tub?

No, it appears to have been Coronado sand under the rattle can black. May leave the pink seats, will make it easier to spot in a parking lot

Been looking for some vintage looking backup lights for the '47 - found these on ebay. Pretty much exactly the same as the bullet type front marker lights on early '47 & back CJ2A (except all chrome). The housings were cheap @ $9.99 each shipped, but they came with red lenses. https://www.ebay.com/itm/182182464147 The clear glass lenses also found on ebay, but I bought the last two this guy had, $6 each https://www.ebay.com/itm/123729233849 |

Like the lights, Thanks for sharing. Do you have any info on where any more of the clear lens can be purchased?

It is NOT a Jeep Willys! It is a Willys jeep.

Thanks Mike, I notice in his store he also sells old jeep lens. I am waiting on an answer from him to see if they will fit his bullet lights. I have a nice early grill that needs parking lights that and I want to replace my later 47 grill with.

I might give mine a light sanding & dip them in saltwater to make them match the patina on the rest of the rig.
