My 153 came out of a 68 Chevy II so it has a stock 153 tooth flywheel with a 20” clutch and the smaller bell housing with the tin inspection cover on the bottom. I haven’t had the flywheel off but it looks fairly heavy as it doesn’t appear to be relieved on the back side

A 20" might be a little big; I'm running a 10 1/2" clutch.

I got the mercruiser running, 155-160psi all cylinders with a smooth idle. After pulling the oil pan to check on the internals I found a piece of piston in the pan, so full teardown and off to the machine shop.

The valves and seats are in good shape so I just cleaned up the sealing surfaces with some valve lapping compound.

You stated the engine was running- did you settle on manifolds? Or was it running on the boat stuff? It appears that your engine has the larger port cyl head.

Engine looks great, should last forever now. Glad you caught the broken piston.

It was running with the boat stuff on it. I'm surprised it ran as well as it did with the piston like that. I caught it before too much metal went through the bearings so I was able to keep std rod and main bearings, the crank cleaned up with a light polish.

I'm going to make a adapter plate from 3/8" steel to match the ports and then make my own manifold off that. I'm thinking of making the intake from 16ga or 1/8" sheet and exhaust from a cracked jeep 4.0 exhaust manifold since all the bends are already there. I also have to do something with the front sump oil pan so it clears the front diff.

Driver's side motor mount. I used all the available bolt holes to make it as strong as possible and 1/4" cold rolled steel. I shortened the original Mercruiser Alternator bracket and welded it on top of the mount.

Passenger's side motor mount. I decided to go with an electric fuel pump over a mechanical one.

First test fit of the engine, transmission and transfer case. Everything seems to clear so far, I'm also planning to set the tub on to be sure everything fits before making a new crossmember and finish welding the motor mounts.

Two issues I’ve had with the 153 in Shiny are that the bell housing is too close to the firewall to allow a stock gas pedal linkage, and that the radiator sits a little too high relative to the fan

I noticed the fan I'll probably end up trimming the bottom of the radiator shroud or go with an electric fan instead. Did you keep the stock clutch and brake pedal?

It had the stock clutch and brake pedal when I got it, but the prior owner didn’t move the frame mounts for the clutch and pedal shafts to match the slightly shifted location of the balls on the drivetrain so the pedals are cocked a little, and very worn. I might address that this winter. The clutch release arm was also poorly modified and wracked. I made a new one and lined up that shaft when I rebuilt the transfer case and tranny winter before last. I have the smaller 153 tooth cast iron bell housing out of an early corvette which gives me a little more room in general except that it has the cast in mounts on the sides.

Motor mounts done. 100% reversable in case it ever goes back to stock form, 5/16 bolts on the passengers side are temporary and will be replaces with 3/8 GR8. I'm going to add a removable gusset plate to help support the back side of the drivers side mount.

Test fit of the body with the mercruiser and sm465 in. Everything clears nicely, about 1" of body lift will allow me to reuse the original cross member with no lowering blocks for max ground clearance and skid plate that will go up to the engine oil pan. I decided to with hanging pedals since I have a set from an XJ that will fit with some modification.
