Just want to say thanks to Giles for pointing out my error with the mounting of the headlight supports. I mounted them under the grill lip today and relocated the support blocks.

I also mounted some bars from the ceiling in my unused bay to hang all the completed parts. Now they can patiently wait in a clean area to be installed.

Happy Father’s Day.

I snuck out in the shop early this morning and started work on the hood.
I got the hinge repaired and some holes filled where I suspect the spare tire carrier was mounted.

I did some more work on the hood today but it needs more love.
I messed around with the seats today but could not get them to fit properly. After some research it turns out that they are from a CJ3A or CJ3B. So I will need to modify the legs and the lip attached to the wheel well and the seat back rests on to make them work.

I got my wheels back from the sandblaster today.
Cleaned them up and got them in primer and paint.
Bright white wheels for bright green jeep.

There was a GPW tub out front of the sandblast shop. No one had the guys name so I left a note. Always looking to connect with local flat fender enthusiasts.

I visited with Andy recently and he let me take my 16 year old daughter for a spin in his jeep. So fun. Thanks again.
I crawled all over his Jeep taking pictures and getting ideas.

When I got home I drilled the fuel tank holes in the floor and set the tank in place. With the tank in position I can work on getting the seats right. I’ll modify the 3A seats frames to work. I can’t justify the money for 2A seats when these will work just fine with some minor mods.

I started cleaning up my fuel tank today and found some holes. Might be worth patching but maybe a new tank is in my future. Not sure yet.

I only had the long strap to secure the tank. So I fabricated the short strap that attaches to it. I also bent up the rear tank bracket.

I’m pretty happy with the result.

So I completely destroyed the passenger side of the hood I was working on. Clearly I don’t understand metal shaping as well as I thought I did. Good news though I own a second hood. My friend Ken, the automotive repair wizard, came by to help today. It’s amazing to watch him work. He hammered on that hood for about 3 hours. Neve beat on it, just a few light taps then rub his hand over the area, then tap again. Slowly it takes shape, the dents and bends go away and the oil canning disappears. I was able to assist a bit and I did all the welding. It was a great day of learning.
Ken then went to work on the fenders and got them all nice and straight, which solved the problem of how the hood sits above the fender. It now has a clean, even gap between the fender and the edge of the hood.

I did some work on the fuel tank today. The bottom is pretty rusty with 3 holes in it and plenty of thin spots. I cut out the bottom of the tank and made a patch. Ken has offered to weld the patch in with his TIG. I’ll get the tank cleaned up and take it over to his shop soon.

I did some body work today. I’m new to working with body filler but so far so good. I’m just trying to get out the most obvious imperfections with a very thin layer of filler. I’m not going for perfection. Initially I was applying it too thick but I’m getting a better feel for it now.

Good to hear you’re getting the hang of using body filler, it’s a useful life skill 😉
When you run your hand over the repaired section near the hood hinge, how does it feel? When I see a sharp transition between the filler and the metal it generally indicates undercutting or a high spot.

One thing about opening the bottom on a gas tank; you sure can get the crud out of it!

I have feathered the filler so there are no hard edges. Nice and smooth. I’m also trying to get it as thin as possible.

As for the fuel tank it was surprisingly clean inside. It’s at the sandblaster now and they will gently clear out the inside with walnut. Once the patch is welded back in I’ll slosh it with fuel tank sealer.

I finally got around to fabricating the 2 bolts that hold down the headlight bracket. Now I can remove the fenders and paint them.

Thanks LR47, you may be overstating my abilities but I appreciate the encouragement.

Last night and today I got the front end parts primed and painted.

You can see some pitting due to the corrosion that was present, but I kind of like it. It’s like a badge of honour for the 75 year old hood.

I had a marathon jeep day today. They happen once every 6 weeks or so. Other than that I just pick away at it. Ken my co builder came by and we got the seats mounted. You may recall that I recently figured out that my CJ2A built on a GPW frame has seats from a CJ3B. Also they were well used and a bit bent up so they needed a bit of modification to get them in.

Started with some heat to help with bending.

Then we fabricated new legs at the back of both front seats.

We made new shelves for the rear of the seat to rest on and repositioned them.

I’m pretty happy with the final product.

I’ll take the seats in to the sandblaster soon and get them cleaned up and painted ready for upholstery.

Now I can remove the tub and get it ready for final painting.
