Today’s progress.

I got the accelerator pedal, brake pedal and clutch pedal installed.

It’s coming together ! 🙂

And the fuel tank passed inspection. 24 hours on the bench full
of fuel and no leaks found.

Thanks NF.

Earlier this week my daughter and I measured up the seat frames and went to the fabric store. I picked up some black marine vinyl to upholster the seats with. My daughter will be doing the sewing. Confidence is high. I also cut out patterns and took them in to The Foam Shop to get foam cut for the seats.

Today I cut a few hood blocks. I made a couple longer and a spare.
I’m coating all the wood with spar varnish. I used it on my ocean kayak. It looks great and holds up really well.

Happy Birthday to me. My wife Sarah arranged for a nice outdoor gathering of friends for a few drinks. She also had this amazing cake made. Very kind.

Super cool and thoughtful! Gotta say the cakemaker did a pretty good job on the details (hood latches!) and paint/icing color.

Thanks everyone. Party’s over, time to get back to it.
Ken came by today and we spent the day wiring the jeep. The jeep now starts and all the gauges power up. We ran some wires for lights but did not get any lights installed. I did not buy a premade harness. We are just doing it ourselves. I don’t have all the proper colours on the diagram but I made a key to match the colours I do have to what’s shown. Still lots to do.

Jon, what are you using for the main harness insulation? Traditional cloth, or something modern and far more practical/durable? Please share a few pix if possible, thanks.

The harness insulation is a split mesh webbing. I bought a 25’ roll. Cuts to any length.  It works really well and grabs the wires tight. I bought it locally but it’s available on Amazon. It comes
In 1/4”, 1/2” and 3/4”. I’ve been adding a small tie wrap at each end. Probably not required but that’s what I did. The split design is nice because an individual wire can exit the bundle anywhere along the line easily.

Good solution, thanks for sharing Jon. My only caveat would be the mesh design and water (undervehicle splashing, fording, etc.) But even a fully sheathed harness would likely have similar issues.

Lindsay,

I see what you are saying. My goal was to make the wiring presentable under the hood and prevent chafing which I think the casing does well. I don’t think any casing is going to keep things dry. In fact I think the old cloth casing would probably absorb water. Either way each wire has a thick plastic coating which is now protected from damage.

I do appreciate your comments as always. Keep the discussion coming.

Snuck in to the garage for a quick hour today.
I got the throttle and choke control cables installed.
Baby steps.

I got the grill welting on today. I modified some pliers so I could bend the rivets properly.

I also got the air dam installed around the radiator. I opted for heavy rubber rather than the traditional felt material. I used stainless steel wire to make the staples to attach it.

I also got the marker lights installed which I will be using as signal lights. I still need lenses for them.

And I got the grill installed.
It was a good day!🙂

It's nice to see this one come together. That color is sort of close to what my '48 will eventually be.

It’s a great colour, I agree.

So the amount of lean has me concerned. I know that these Jeep’s have a bit of lean due to the engine offset to the drivers side and the fuel tank being on the left. But I think mine leans over way too much. I swapped the springs left for right today on both the front and back. No noticeable change, so it appears that I need new springs. I considered reshaping the springs I have but considering they are from 1942 that may be a part worth replacing.

Before:

After swapping springs left to right:

It still has a pretty good lean to the left.
