Jon--I have a 2" main bent bar sitting here. Not wanting to send to scrapyard! No brace pieces though.

Chuck,

You should post it on the Canadian Willys Parts Exchange page.

I appreciate the offer though.

Thanks

Ok so I ran into a snag.

I completely rebuilt the engine last March and reused the oil jet that was in there. My engine is #82016 and they changed from the .07” hole to the smaller .04” hole at engine 166871 which makes me think I have the .07” oiler in there.

Since rebuild I have only ever run the engine for maybe 10 minutes at a time and I was getting 20 psi which I was happy with. Once I got it on the road for the first time this week it would start out at 20 psi but then I noticed that after a while it dropped down to under 5 psi. I asked around and the first place to look was the oil. I was running 10W30 and I think that as it warmed and thinned the pressure dropped. Yesterday I changed the oil to 15W40 and I got 30 psi when starting the cold engine. Once it warmed up with a drive around the neighborhood the pressure would drop to about 6 psi at idle and up to max 22 psi when I revved the engine. So the next place to look is that orifice. I should have ensured the smaller holes oiler was used when I built the engine but to be honest I was trying to reuse parts and I was on a budget. And I’m not a mechanic. So I think with the smaller passage way in there the oil pressure should rise. With the thicker oil in there I am still above “minimum safe oil pressure” but I’m going to change it out. It’s just under the timing gear cover so not too hard to get to.

I found the part and traded an oil pan for it. Everyone is happy and it’s on the way to me. Hopefully I’ll get it next week, install it and solve my oil pressure problem.

The new part arrived and I got it installed today. I ran the jeep for maybe 10 minutes then had to start dinner. The pressure rose a bit up to about 32psi but that’s with a cold engine idled for about 10 minutes. I’ll need to go out for a test drive tomorrow and see how far it drops once it gets good and warm.

Even if installing that part does not fix the oil pressure issue, I’m glad I did it. Now I know all the bearings are getting lubricant.

If it’s still a problem, I’ll swap out the gauge and see if that’s the culprit.

After that I guess the oil pump is the next obvious place to look.

Beyond that I’m stumped.

Fingers crossed for a good test drive tomorrow.

I have found over the years that "usually" when the engine runs fine, no knocking etc. A bad cam bearing is the culprit. Unfortunately there is no way to determine that one way or the other is to tear the engine down. Also, if I remember correctly there is a pressure relief valve in the oil pump and also if the plate is worn (the oil pump cover plate) that will cause low pressure.

A friend gave me the same advice about the oil pump. Time to investigate there I guess.

The oil pump I installed was new. But there could be an issue with it.

I built the engine with new bearings. Hopefully the cam bearing is not the problem.

I doubt that this is the issue but keep in mind that these engines were designed for staight 30 wt. The clearances are pretty loose.

Jon I have the same problem. In researching it I was told that there is also a restriction in the bypass filter that can cause low oil pressure. If I recall correctly it’s in the hose out of the filter.

Mike,

I’ve been reading the same. I have a spare oil filter. Maybe I’ll swap it out and see if that helps.

I have read that some people eliminate the oil filter and just plumb the oil from the outlet to the timing gear cover port.

So swapping out the timing gear oil jet helped a bit but I still get low oil pressure after things warm up.

I now get 40 psi when starting the cold engine.
25 psi after the engine warms up at idle.
10-20 psi while driving around depending on what gear I’m in and how hard I accelerate.
After 15 minutes of driving I’m down to about 6 psi at idle up to around 22 psi when I rev the engine.

Still seems low to me.

I shimmed the spring increasing the pressure on the relief valve in the oil pump. Just incase oil was leaking back there but I don’t think it made much difference.

I’ll swap out the oil pressure gauge next to see if it’s faulty.

My oil pump is new but I’ve been reading that there can be some oil bypass in there so maybe if it’s not a bad gauge I’ll pull the pump and put a thinner gasket in the cover to get a tighter fit.

when I was a kid a long time ago my old man did not like those by-pass filters. He took them off our jeeps, just kept the oil changed, never a problem that I recall. Later I did the same on a couple, no problem, kept good oil in them. Did my share of jamborees and wheeling with the one. I've heard #1 main and rod bearings suffer because that's where the oil is taken for the filter.

Good news.
My oil pressure gauge is under reading. Which means my engine is producing proper oil pressure.

Trust the U.S.-made Snap-On gauge, not the China or India made repop.

I had a bit of a shock and an education this week. My 6V battery exploded while I was trying to start the jeep recently. It went off like a shotgun. Scared the crap out of me. I had it on the battery charger overnight. Apparently they can get overcharged. The water boils off and hydrogen gas builds up. One spark during start and BOOM! 💥

So obviously I need a new battery. However, I find that I don’t love the 6V setup. So I’ve decided to take this opportunity to swap everything over to 12V.

Yesterday I gave the jeep a 6 voltectomy.

I dropped the starter off at Brighouse electric to have it converted to 12V. (I could have left it 6 and it would spin fast but better to make it 12). I picked up an AC Delco 10si alternator. I’ve ordered a new fuel gauge, power converter for the horn, pertronix ignition and coil. I went to Napa and got all my 12v bulbs.

Once everything arrives I should be able to get it rewired in a day.
