Well friends I found the source of the engine knock.
It’s the rod bearings. They are pretty loose in there.
I checked my receipt from the machine shop and the ground the crank .030” and gave me .020” rod bearings although the receipt shows .030” rod bearings. I’m guessing they were pounding away that .010” for a while. I’m not angry. Yes they gave me the wrong bearings but ultimately my mistake for not catching it and putting them in.

I have not checked the main bearings yet but hopefully I installed the correct bearings there.

Time to pull the engine and get the crankshaft reground.

Jon:

It is a good thing that you pulled the pan to investigate the noise. If any one of those rods had let go it could have cost hundreds of Canadian dollars in repairs. It is going to be expensive enough as it is and the whole thing is going to delay your enjoyment of the experience of just driving your jeep to your heart's content.

Here's hoping that your crank will cleanup to .030" undersize and that any materials in the oil didn't damage the mains. I would have the rods checked before reassembly.

I have followed your project from the start and I hope this setback doesn't discourage you from seeing this through.

Cheers!

Ed, I completely agree. Glad I didn’t wait any longer to pull the pan. I am not deterred. I try to be a glass 1/2 full guy. So I’m glad we identified the problem. And my daughter pointed out that I like to work my jeep and now I get to work on it more.

Fresh in from the machine shop.

Just waiting for new bearings, seals and water pump parts to arrive and we’ll get this thing back together. Hopefully back on the road for August.

Looks pretty. I would suggest pushing a rifle brush through the oiling passages. I've always found grit and crud inside those holes even when it appeared really clean.

I bought a rifle brush and chased all the oil galleries. I’m confident it’s nice and clean in there.

The last of my engine rebuild parts arrived today so tomorrow we are going to build as much of the engine as we can and hopefully get the block mounted on the frame again. Then I can get all the ancillary parts re attached as well as the fenders grill and hood. Hopefully the RC will be back on the road this weekend! 🤞🏻

I made some more progress on the engine today.
I was hoping to have it in this weekend but that’s not going to happen. I can’t get back to it for a bit but hopefully it will be installed and back on the road early in September.

Andy,

The engine is on hold.

We are on Saltspring for a week. Home for a day then I take Lola out to Montreal to set her up for her first year at University.

Unfortunately the jeep will just have to wait till September.

I made a jig to line up the alternator pulley properly.
Hope I measured correctly!

I did not yet get in to the manual to check on that.
Thanks though!
