Ive been doing jeep archeology, washing away the accumulated gunk, cleaning as i go and reusing every original piece i can. Here's some of what I've found....
Pulled the starter motor to get at the freeze plugs (expansion plug or welch plug for searchers) and found an oil preserved collection of critters stuck to the block! With the starter out of the way, popped the plug and found a wall of crud behind door No 1 (rearmost freeze plug) Even denser wall of crud behind the front freeze plug I picked it out with a heavy copper rod i filed to a pick point and bent After I got the rust loose, i used gorilla tape on all the block openings..... and set the head on to help hold the tape. I used the compressor to blow air into one opening while shop vacuuming the other hole. It worked well enough but I know it really needs a hot tanking. Edited by EMyers - 10 Mar. 2018 at 3:07am |

Engine block date stamp on the oil pan surface. Is 13 the 13th week of 1945? If so, this is Otie's birthday month

If you have that much crud in the block, it's worth getting it vatted.
The valves moving around indicate loose valve guides. Ya might wanna get fresh valve springs while they are out. An obscure fact I came across once is that the cam only has a bearing in front. The other journals ride on the block. The block can be be bored out for full bearing support. Probably better oil pressure from closer tolerances, as well. Use Ford 302/289 cam bearings.

Good advice. Since that crud post, I have made plans to get it properly tanked and magna fluxed at a shop that i found has done these motors. I got three other opinions on this shop and all highly recommend him. He also will be installing hardened guides, new valves and springs, grind and balance the crank and cam. Hopefully it won't need decking because i cannot loose the SN. Thanks for the cam bearing info, sounds like a worthwhile improvement. ill look into that

It’s been a while but I’ve been making slow steady progress in the disassembly and cleaning parts to see what can be re-used and what’s too far gone. Took a lot of pics. Engine is pulled and at the shop. Frame is blasted and painted. Working on the axles and brakes now.
Edit: works for me but I own the pics. Please let me know if anyone can see them. They are in order of date taken with some extras thrown in that I use for reference. Edited by EMyers - 10 Aug. 2018 at 1:19am |

Still slowly cleaning, sorting and de-rusting when I wasn’t walleye fishing! It’s been a prefect summer for it.
Added some new pics on the google pics link and added the link to my first post so it’s easier to find. I hope someone can use them for reference some day. While everything is apart, I figured it’s a good time to upgrade to 11“ brakes all the way round. Tracking says they arrive tomorrow! |

I've read that some wheels will fit others wont. You really need to measure your wheels. I have a set of 11 inchers on the bench. The drum measures 11-3/4" OD.

Aren't the fitment issues related to disc conversions?
I was under the impression that jeeps that came with 11" drums would have had 15" wheels from the factory(?) |

My wheels are 16‘s although in researching the 11“ brakes, others have had them fit on 15‘s using a combination of parts
Read here for more on that. Scroll down to potential problems https://www.cj3b.info/Tech/Brakes11inch.html I have one Jeep 15“ rim. When I get the brakes on, I’ll check it. Edited by EMyers - 08 Sep. 2018 at 2:35pm |

CJ2As never come with 11" brakes from the factory. It may be that early 15" wheels are a problem, later ones are ok.
