Anyone have a suggestion for a hat that will stay on in an open Willys at 60mph?

I find trying to maintain 55mph it tends to creep up on 60 and any head wind and its over that.

Jpets suggestion of a Bonnie hat was high on my list of considerations. If I go that way I'll have to pickup a non military color I don't want to do anything to confuse the public thinking CHUG is or ever was G503.
I knew someone would suggest a helmet.

I wear a boonie hat as well. It has a ‘stampede strap’ that goes under your chin that I tighten up when driving at highway speed. On the trail I put the strap up over the back brim because I don’t really like that string bobbing around on my throat.

I"ve had some success with a backwards baseball hat but don't care for the look.  I prefer the boonie style.  I think a snug fit would be better.

i could swear m38mike mentioned boonie hat modified with wire sewn into brim. sounds like a great idea. if you see this Mike, maybe you could provide some details such as wire type and gauge, and what did you use to attach the wire (sewed on binding tape), etc.?

i have a 5.10 boonie hat that is black so a little less militaristic, can sew, and want to try out the wire thang.

Ah yes, the standard Alabama look.Wink

(hard to get away from the functionality of it whether you like the look or not)

The times I've been over 60mph in a flattie a helmet would be comforting...besides, that was a pretty cool looking helmet...'copter pilot vibe. (now there's a thought...built in microphone headset would be pretty cool when you're white knucklin' down the highway)LOL

Get yourself a Tilley hat!  Guaranteed for life, even against loss!  (at least mine was, and they replaced it for free!)
It has two straps, a back of head strap, and a chin strap.  It floats, it has a pocket inside for spare cash etc...  They were made for sailors so you know it's going to be secure in wind.
Awesome hat!

Beanie hat is best bet, but not black in the dark, will look like you are going equipped.

I have a Desert Tan Camo Boonie I'm going to give a test drive next time out and about. Might have to find one in Navy Blue if it works out.

Thisoldwillys,

let us know how floppy the brim is in the wind.

you are on to something. i am impressed by the Shelta hat. the slim brim idea is right on. may have to go with orange to match my wheels and seat belts.

I just ordered a Shelta Seahawk Hat and Sun Gloves. The last couple of times we've gone on the desert trails, my hat brim flops back, so my forehead gets burned. And even though I wear long sleeves, my hands get burned also. The gloves should give me added protection. We love riding in our jeep, with the windshield down, even though it gets into the 100 degree range, but the sun is a scorcher, even in the morning.
