Andy:
Quote Hi Sean, my engine 4LR110818 has head casting number 640161. There is no boss and the valve clearance is 0.014". The date numbers are 3-6 and W6. Can you please tell me when it was made?
Being a replacement engine, there's no way to correlate the serial number to a vehicle production date.  What vehicle is it in?

If you can get the casting details, it would be possible to narrow the range of dates.  eg, casting number, casting date (mo./day) and some of the finer points shown here:

I have writen the drivers side numbers in the same pattern as they are on the block.
The block is the later doughnut type.
I would like to know what year the engine was made if possible.

The Jeep is 29488.
Thank you,

Thanks Toby.

Yours is an early 638632 casting, I'm looking for info on 641087 castings.

Appreciate the thought though!

Sean,

I have an engine that is claimed to be a '47, however, after studying your 641087 data thread I'm not sure what it is.

appears to be the v1.3 column but it has a data plate boss under the distributor mount.

ser. no. - 3507681 (water pump)
Casting - 641087 L W10 A NI-CR-N2
lower, left, rear - 10-31 B

Isn't that spot under the distributor where the plate goes on a Kaiser Supersonic? (Henry J engine)

The Henry J car was produced from 1950 to 1953. Did they make an over-production of the engines and start putting them in Jeeps?
Seems like I have read where the L 134 engine was used in vehicles up into the 1960's...... Is this so?

Rit:

Don't know how to interpret your engine s/n, but ...

Quote ... lower, left, rear - 10-31 B ...
most likely October 31, 1950
  • petcock was moved aft of fill tube on 5/8/50
  • data plate pad was added on 5/18/50
  • 2 lower freeze plugs were eliminated on 11/6/50

Oh man, my falt for not doing my homework. Upon rereading the email corrispondence with the PO, he claimed the engine came out of a 46/47 2A. My Jeep is far from perfect and it does appear to be in decent shape (compressions running ~ 60psig).

Thanks guys for the great help, and Sean again, for all of your great historical work.

The 35xxxxx serial numbers are Henry J engines. The rivets remaining near the distributor held the Supersonic data tag. Regular Jeep engines didn't have a tag. Unfortunately I have not found anyone who can align Supersonic engine serial numbers with automobiles. I doubt that Supersonic engines were ever factory installed in Jeeps. I do have a theory why so many found their way into Jeeps. What if a brand new replacement Kaiser Supersonic engine cost less than a brand new replacement Willys Jeep engine? It wouldn't take long for people to figure out they could save a few bucks with a Supersonic.

Henry J cars used a different distributor and oil pan, among other things, than a Jeep. Some 35xxxxx engines I have surveyed do have remaining Henry J components thereby proving a few did actually get swapped in from a car.

Sean,

Here are a couple of pics of the motor that came out of my '42 GPW.  Based on my research, and the wealth of information you have provided, it appears as if this 641087 block and T-90 transmission that is in my GPW came out of a CJ2A.

The tranny was cast 6-19-46... Can you give me details on the block, when it was cast and what it would have originally been in?

641087-L-W7 A N1 - CR - N2
Casting date may be 11-4 ?
Serial no J253982

Appears to be 641087 v1.1

Thanks,
Sean

Ran across this engine recently. From what these pics show any idea just what year or model it would have came in?
So many projects and so little time.

 Definitely not a CJ2. Probably a CJ2-A, possibly a wagon or a truck. Maybe early CJ3A?
