Hi folks, I'm new. I'm putting together a 48 CJ I bought from an old doctor two years ago that had sat in a barn for many years and I'm having trouble finding an Auto-Lite 1M-100 6v battery like the book says you're supposed to have. Are there suitable replacement batteries that fit the bill...and fit the battery box? If there are replacements, what kind of CCA should I be looking for? I bought a regular 6v battery from Rural King not knowing any better, and at 640CCA my starter cranks very slow. I did get it fired up today for the first time in probably 15-20 years after I chased starting issues like a bad coil and bad points that I replaced. Found a loose ground wire to the distributor but the battery was only putting out about 5v after cranking awhile so I jumped it with my 12v jump pack and it fired right up. :)

640 CCA should crank it over just fine, providing you have a good starter, proper size battery cables, and all the ground straps in place with good clean connections. I have a 575 CCA Duralast battery and it cranks pretty good. But before winter I plan to replace it with a "SLI1" 700 CCA group 1 battery from Batteries Plus.

Since you are in Indiana - Farm & Fleet is also a good place to buy one - their house brand is in all my vehicles and they have a 6v & 8v for the farming needs which both work well in our CJ-2As.

Welcome to the page, JayBob! I use an Optima 6V battery too. They're great when new but after 9-10 years, they're not so good. I went with the Optima because I got tired of EVERY lead-acid battery I've EVER had leaking acid all over.

From what I have heard, your CCA should be at least double the size of the engine (134 needs 268 CCA, 350 needs 700 CCA, etc.)
Pretty much any 6v battery should work on the L134.
