I found these special nuts used to hold the connecting rod caps to the connecting rod. One side is machined for the cap contact. Part # 636962 Group 10-05. Note the notch cut on the side of the nut for locating the machined side. The nut on the left shows the raised machined surface. Thanks Wes K. for the clarification. There would also be a stamped Pal nut used to lock this machined nut to the bolt. Pal nut # 52825, 7/16x20. The later blocks went to a 3/8" conn rod bolt.

Perfect Sean... Interesting to read in the Military TM9-1803A that they want the conn rod bolts toqued 50-55 ft lbs, then the pal nuts turned down to stop and one full turn more. The CJ service manual says 35-45 ft lbs and turn the pal nuts 1/3 turn after stop. Variation in torque rules...7/16 diameter vs 3/8" conn rod bolts...????

Turning those lock nuts one full turn is asking alot. I stopped at 3/4 turn on the 7/16...plenty tight. But 1/3 turn? I assume the CJ Manual torque value is for the smaller bolt. Still seems to light for the lock nut at 1/3 turn past stop.
Interesting...

Yes, ya gotta beware what vintage manual you're looking at for torque specs.  Later manual printings tend to ignore the early engines.
  • 7/16" bolt gets 50-55 lbs
  • 3/8" bolt gets 35-45 lbs
Interesting about the pal nut though.  '45 CJ2A manual says turn it additional 1/2 turn.  I doubt it would withstand a full turn.

I don't know why they used the notched nut either, except perhaps to identify which end is up, since there is a right way and wrong way.  I've found a large percentage of this type nut on my '46 (not notched, but w/the machined step), even in places that don't necessarily need it!
