I came home from work yesterday and brought in the mail, a bucket of KFC, my lunch bag, truck tool bag, and coat. So my hands were full. In the Mail I noticed there was an envelope from some mortgage company I never heard of (we get offers on the house or mortgage deals all the time) I jokingly said to the wife as I ran past dumping everything on the table on my way to the bathroom....wonder what interest rate they offer on ZERO balance? I had to pee real bad other wise I would have dropped it into the waste can in the carport. While I am in the bathroom the wife decides to open it, you know,,,just to see.......and what it was.... and its the title to our house...it's official....it's ours. And yes its already in the fire safe. We figured now days with all the times over the 29 years we refinanced it took to pay off the first and then the 2 years it took to pay off a line of credit that had somehow attached itself to the title (paid off in Dec.) combined with the buying and selling of Mortgages that caused the big crash in 2008 we would never actually see the thing figured it would be hiding in some cardboard box in some banks back room in the Bahamas. Now to keep paying the Tax so the benevolent all caring Government can't take it away LOL. Edited by Mark W. - 26 Jan. 2022 at 1:25am |

We have a small Visa balance that is being ate up very quickly. But since the First Mortgage has been paid off 25% of my pay has been going into my 401K with a target date of May 2024 as my retirement date. Soon as the wife can get on Medicare.

I bet you are glad you din't toss it in the trash!
We both retired last year, and paid off everything but the house. We only owe a little more on it which will be paid off within the next 12 months. So, we were in great shape.... Then we went to the Ford dealer in October. I bought a slightly used F150, and we ordered a new Bronco "for my wife". So much for being out of debt.

Oldpappy. About 7 months ago we came to the realization that with retirement approaching and the wifes little 2005 Focus having 240K on the clock that while it has been almost maintenance free (OK cheap) it would be lucky to make it to our retirement date so replacing it would come out of retirement money. So we started looking for a replacement as it turned out that was a newer larger 2013 Focus with about 90K on the clock and purchased from a young guy who was selling it to afford to start life with his girl friend (Cute very very nice couple). Wife took out a loan at work against her 401K and set it up so its paid off before she leaves work. Cost for the loan was $50 and the 4% interest goes right back into her 401K since she is borrowing from herself. She then transferred stores from 85 miles round trip commute to less then 5 miles a day. She only works 3 days a week. Just enough to pay the loan, and make sure she keeps up the Union Med insurance and a little extra for her hobbies etc. We figure that car will last another 120-140K and at the rate we will be driving it until we are both old enough driving will be very limited. When my Pickup needs replacing I'm instead going to pull it in the shop and do it. Thinking 220HP 283 rebuild the AX-15 5spd OD manual. Replace the front seats and change the stupid console. Then a little Body work and a repaint. And it will be good for another 100K Anyone ever seen a 98 Dakota with a SBC in it LOL.

I thought long and hard about replacing my older F150. It was a very good truck, and being a Lariat package had all the hoops bells and whistles, which can mean more to go wrong as they get older, but everything still worked fine. It just had a lot of miles on it.
We plan to do some traveling, and I wanted to go into retirement with a comfortable tow vehicle I would feel comfortable about driving cross country. I was planning on building a classic old truck for this, but I am moving so slow on my Jeep projects I knew I was better off just biting the bullet, and starting retirement with a couple of fresh vehicles I didn't have to work on. I may still build a classic hot rod truck, but not until I finish the three Jeep projects I have started. I don't have much in the way of garage space, and can only work on one vehicle at a time. Marena's car, a 2017 Dodge Journey is in excellent shape with low mileage but I never have liked driving that car. It reminds me of a mini-van and is so underpowered it was almost like sailing. The little Broncos are fun to drive. I think a 283, or any SBC, is a great engine no matter what it is in. I don't think I have seen one in a Dakota, but I have seen them in a lot of unexpected places.
