Not even the mighty Willys jeep can beat Mother Nature! Best not to worry about wintertime setbacks, Mark. S*&t does indeed happen. We'll all look forward to your next Chug Update whenever you're back in service.

So no work progress but some parts news i been looking for the little connector that reduces my CB coax cable to fit through a 3/8"  hole as I need to cut down my cable its about 9ft to long. Finally found those. And Micah turned me on to a stupid expensive locking gas cap being sold on eBay by Antique Archeology  you know American Pickers! They were asking $74 with $12 shipping OH MY wel this morning they sent an offer and I bought it for $54 shipped. About twice what I would guess a regular locking cap might cost. I figure it being in the box which states right on it CJ2A  CJ3A  and who its from makes it worth while. Ill make a new gasket and if its not vented work that out a simple coil of say 1/16th brass tubing on the inside of the cap passing through a 1/16" hole in the cap should work nicely.

This thread as I see it has about four purposes for me to play show and tell (my best subject in school) for me to share my trials and tribulations so others may either learn or most likely avoid stuff i have done that didn't work out. To document the build so I have it as a record of what I have spent 10+ years working on. And maybe from my point of view the most important thing this giant thing does is it helps keep me motivated. Cause if I don't get something done I have nothing to post.

Ok finally some update. Its been pissy raining all day so no cleaning up the yard. So I got to spend the day in the shop YEA!

I been working on these Windshield mounted Mirrors for a while now. Lots of drawings mostly of the bases trying to find something I liked and that would work with the area of the frame I wanted them to mount and to be able to have the Suicide door clear them as it opens.

I have not gotten one thing I wanted yet and thats a way to fold the mirrors easily. But I know how to do it I just need to make a couple new arms. I also have a way to put extensions on them for a better view when I am towing my trailer. But that can come later. For now I just wanted some side mirrors.

As I drive Dump Truck for a living I am quite adapt at using a conical mirror for everything from checking if some idiot has snuck in under my main mirrors before a lane change and a horrible crunching death as well as backing up around corners. SO my Right side Mirror is a 5" Conical (not an easy thing to find with a matching 5" flat mirror I might add).

Anyway the wife and I discussed should the arm be 90° to the windshield frame or should it say angle up. And I don't see any advantage of it angling up and she liked the straight out look here it is. Disregard the C Clamp holding it in position I am deathly afraid to start drilling holes in the Windshield frame.

These are the second base plates I have made the first ones I did not check well enough where the bolts would be going through the frame and it put the two vertical bolts into the edge of the channel and that would weaken the frame and cause problems with how to get a Nut on the bolts.

Here's a close up of the arm top side

And here's a blurry view of the backside of the base

And a nice side view showing the milling on the arms. The joint between the base and the arm is at a slight angle to move the mirror forward a little to make additional clearance as the Suicide door will swing open.

The bolt in the center of the 3 in line is threaded into the base the one at the tip of the base will pass through the frame in the middle of one of the cross tubes. And the other two will pass through just above and below that tube. I'll have some nice backing washers on these two.

I works out well even with the Defroster Duct and the foam ends I have on it I can just remove the Foam end cap and have access to all three anchoring bolts and nuts.

I also got my CB coax cable cut down in length and the new connector soldered and crimped on.

I knew the floor in my shop was getting unlevel but I had no idea how bad until I noticed the left rear tire sticking out of the body farther then the right side.

SO I put a level across the frame horns and a Jack under the front pumpkin and WOW it takes a full 2" of block under the right tire to level the front of the jeep out. Thats 2" in say 48" That root from my Sugar maple is really doing a number on the shop floor. Pretty soon just getting in and out will be like hill climbing.

Time to get out the Stihl and fix the tree!! The mirrors look great!! Is there any way to fold them up if you get tight on clearance?

Mark,

Great to hear your wife can get into the Jeep!

On your mirror design:  Make a pivoting base so the can be rotated Flat against the front of the window  or sheet metal below.  If it was a clock - the working position is 3 o'clock as in your first picture, Stored out of the way would be 6 or 12 o'clock.

Super nice work!

I am going to make new arms that allow a pivot in the arm itself just out past the windshield frame. It will have to fold forward or down otherwise it will interfere with opening the suicide door. I will most likely mill the arm so that it is cut in half and that cut is long enough to allow two bolts one will be the pivot the other the lock.

For the Towing mirror I will have an arm extension that slips over the existing tube and has a couple of set screws to hold the extension in place.

I want to keep these mirror as stout as possible. Nothing I dislike more in a Truck then mirrors that vibrate. And since I drive a Cummings powered dump truck I have to deal with annoying vibration all day long.

The mirror on a Ford GP is similar in style but it has a thumb screw that allows it to slide in and out and also rotate for when the window is down.

that is a great mirror design as is for someone not putting suicide doors on.

SO the Stant Evr-Loc G-75 size B locking gas cap showed up today. And it fits and it locks and it looks pretty nice. I seriously doubt it could seal tight enough to need me to drill a vent hole due to how the lock mech. works But we shall see.

I'll add a Photo to this post later. Wife is screaming about dinner and as I am running on a Metered Internet from a Hot Spot I set up on my Phone (cable still out due to Global warming and the Huge ICE storm it caused). Making it take for ever to load a photo.

Took some new engine photos today for another discussion didn't want to leave my besties out. So here is CHUG's 140L LOL

And my fancy Locking Fuel Cap

Went up to Richard Darrs magical Willys place yesterday with a new Willys friend here in town who is getting his CJ-3A squared away for his daughter to use as her daily driver (she's 14 now) and Richard had a new set of seat frames to replace the Racing seats he had put in during his misspent youth.

I bought a new Crown Speedo cable the correct length and with a nice Hex head fasteners on both ends. And we figured out the threads on my Transfer case speedo gear retainer thingy were messed up so I have a 7/8"-18t die coming either Mon or Tues. I got the housing lubed with Dry Graphite and the core with a Teflon lube. See how that spins.

I need a day with little wind and 55 degrees so I can get the temp Header paint on the headers and start final left engine side assembly.

I could be dumping fluids in everything in a week or two.

frighteningly beautiful.

you are gonna have to take Chug into a real photo studio and have a photographer document it.

hold up. you have your own, the spray booth and lights. and you are a decent photographer yourself. an iPhone 12 pro or Nikon digital camera and you are set.

lol I actually collect cameras and have a freezer full of film as well as Olympus digital Camera.

I actually have 38 photos published in national magazines and a dozen or so in books. Oh and a few newspapers.

But yes there will be a couple fancy photo shoots in CHUGS future.  But pretty sure they will be outdoors

Maybe the shortest up date yet.

Header Primary and Secondary sections painted with 4 coats VHT Header paint. I went Black for the temporary paint. Header will after engine burn in be Ceramic coated.

OK so I had to chase the threads on the speedo cable attachment point on the transfer case a 7/8"-18T Die and can now attach the new speedo cable I got from Richard Darr.

And I get a call this morning that I knew was coming but really didn't want. FEMA has decided to start hauling off contaminated debris from the fall forest fires and we are going to be starting that Thursday running through Sat (and most likely next week as well) So while I am close enough to engine start and being on the road I could measure it in hours. It will be strung out at least a week or more. Try as I may after 10 hours in that dump truck I find limited energy for working on CHUG and now this week I worked yesterday 11+ hours have today off. And will work until Sunday

Its going to be a while to get the last stuff ready.

I figure a day to fill all the fluids and grease everything not greased during assembly, I have to bleed the brakes and get them somewhat adjusted, I have the Pinion Shims to put into the front suspension, The left side of the engine to assemble, I want to go over a bunch of Nuts and Bolts to make sure they are properly tightened. I have the side mirrors to finish mounting.

And then the actual start up and initial tuning of the engine.

SO much yet to do so little time LOL

Mark, your Work Time-vs.-Shop Time example is the reason why many of us are measuring our Willys restorations in years, not months.
