OK SO BEAR WITH ME: SCREW WORK I knew this would happen if I didn't get all the sht metal painted on Memorial Weekend. some background The Epoxy sealer I am using requires a min of 48 hours before it can be sanded out if need be. So far it has all needed some sanding. The Epoxy Sealer I am using has a MAX 5 day to topcoat window before Sanding is required. The Color I am using has a 18 hour window to get how ever many coats on required. SO I had hoped to spray the Hood and Fenders exterior (which will require sanding) shot with their last coat of Sealer this evening after work. So that it could cure up and be ready to sand out Friday evening or if I work Saturday (which is very likely but I have no way to know until about 3:30 Friday afternoon) this would allow me to then shoot the Inner fenders and the interior of the hood say Thursday or Friday evening (I do not plan on Sanding either unless I should get runs) Should I not have any runs I could then shoot the Front Fenders and the exterior of the Hood on Sunday Evening. Which is the only weekend time I can work on the Jeep until I have the front porch remodel completed. Then come Monday I could shoot the interior of the of the hood and be done with the Hood and Fenders. But no I get home at 6:45pm dinner will be at 7:15pm and its over 80 degrees in the spray booth activator is for 80 and below. I have to get up at 4:30 to make my load time for work tomorrow. Work will be another 10 hours day tomorrow and I am guessing Friday. So this week is screwed for painting. OK rant over. |

I sense discontentment there, Mark. I know of nothing that could be said to ease your distress. We all know you won't compromise on the paint, though.

Oh its just frustrating to go from full speed ahead to trying to squeeze in a few minutes here and there. Especially when what you want to do requires a couple hours in a block to get anything done. I guess I need to find a couple smaller projects to work on as well. Like my grandfather used to say JUST DO SOMETHING.

Love the blue. It looks close to the Blue Teal my old CJ5 had. (one year 1980 color)

OK so after a fun 62 hour week of Dump trucking I got off about 2pm Sat and rushed home got some stuff organized and managed to get another coat of Sealer on the Fenders and inside of the Hood (needed due to sanding out imperfections in the first two coats) This morning I flipped the hood and caught the exterior. I also threw a little more sealer on a couple of thinner spots on the Fenders. SO at this point in time I am waiting 2 full days (maybe 2.5) before I sand out the exterior of the Hood and Fenders. then I will have 2 days to get the Blue on them (both sides of the Hood will be a problem as I have been painting it laying down) I'll have ONLY one evening session to do this as the Color recoat window is only 18 hours. I am sure I will be working long hours all through this week. So its going to be a PITA. If I can't get the Blue on in the evening this week I will have to scuff up the Inner fenders inside and out and the underside of the hood for the Paint to stick as I will be out of the 4-5 day top coat window of the Epoxy Sealer. WOW its as bad as calculus trying to figure all this out. Then I still have the Windshield frame and tailgate to do both are still in High Build Primer. My new goal for paint is to have everything ready to color sand by the 4th of July. |

Every time I try to plan to far ahead things get screwed up for me too, I just do what I can when I can.

Well a new work abuse record. 125 hours in 2 weeks. Oh plus a small raise. What do they think they can do buy me off? LOL So nothing done on Chug except in my head since last Sunday Morning. Tomorrow the wife will throw me out of bed at 4am and I'll be in the Spray booth by 5am. Hoping to do a quick scuff sand on the Hood interior and the whole of both Fenders (required since I missed the 5 day limit for top coating the epoxy as shot). If I can get two coats on before 9am I am going to a small car swap meet. Then home to work on the porch as promised. I'll then flip the hood Tomorrow evening and get a couple/3 coats on it as well as a 3rd coat on the Fenders. And they will be done. Still have the Tailgate and Windshield frame to get sealed and painted. Maybe next weekend. BIG Pay checks will be rolling in for the foreseeable future so I guess its time to pickup the last things on the shopping list. |

OK I got a later start then I wanted this morning but I have now got the Hood and Fenders ready to shoot color on. BUT in 30 min I need to leave if I am going to run to the swap meet and be back by 11 to work on the porch as promised. And I really can't skip going into Salem as I left my phone in the Dump truck last night. So I have to go get it anyway. I think I will watch the temp today and if the spray booth doesn't get to hot I will shoot the color tonight (have to get all three coats on within 18 hours). Thinking I am going to sand to 600 grit the Cowl and repaint a top coat on it to get rid of the over spray and weird streaks. I can break the paint line at the joint with the Lower cowl section and use a soft edge (hold the masking tape up about 1/4" from the surface so no sharp edge to deal with makes it easy to color sand smooth) But I will have the rest of the Tub to mask off. PITA Man I am tired of Painting.

I'm going to go a different route when I mask off. I'll do 1.5" wide tape just under the lip at the top of the dash and just under the rain gutter (I have a near full length rain gutter) then use .5 to .75 mil plastic to drape over the rest of the tub. Along the Upper to Lower Cowl Joint I am going to cause the tape line to stand away from the tub about 1/4" which will cause a feathered edge and stop it from having a raised edge that is a PITA to sand smooth. of course I will then paint across the raised tape line instead of into it or along it. I used to do this on my model airplanes (some with 48" wingspans) when I had to add another coat to only a small area.

I've read that you shouldn't use plastic sheet to keep paint off because the paint won't stick to the plastic and it will flake off and get on your fresh good paint. I guess if you don't unmask until the new paint is completely dry it wouldn't be a problem, but do you want to take a chance?

This paint is dry enough for tape in 8 hours. So it should not be a problem. And based on all the paint stuck to the walls of the spray booth sticking to plastic is not one of this paints challenges.

Hey, Mark,
When you get a chance, please post some pics of your large-scale model aircraft in the 'non-Jeep-related' area of the 2A Page. Some of us would love to see them--4-ft wingspan, wow!

Just so it doesn't get lost This was the only one I could find. I did most of my Model airplane stuff prior to going digital for photography. The plane is a Tomahawk kit from the 60's that has been slightly modified for an even called FOX Racing. a Control Line even where 3-4 plane race around the circle at the same time. 70 lap heats 140 lap final with 2-4 pit stops Only engine allowed is a FOX .35 Stunt engine. All my other planes are packed away (25 planes from 18" Wingspan to 48" wingspan take up a huge amount of room when not the center of attention. |
