I like, no need my coffee in the morning. If I go for a morning jeep ride, I like to take my coffee along. But without a cup holder, it's a matter of holding it between my knees, which brings it's own perils. So I've been casting about for some kind of cup holder.
I stopped by the Harbor Freight store this afternoon and saw this sheet metal spray can holder. It has magnets on the side so it can be stuck on the side of a tool box. After looking it over, I thought I'd try to make it into a cup holder. It has six large magnets glued to the side, complete with rubber covers so the magnets won't scratch anything. I pried off the magnets to reuses on the bottom. I cut off the upper edge of the side metal just to get it out of the way. I epoxied 3 of the magnets to the base, then sanded and rattle can painted it black. The rubber boots were glued onto the magnets to protect the paint. It sets firmly on the edge of the toolbox, next to the passenger seat. Now I can easily reach my coffee! For about $8 (with the standard 20% off coupon), it makes a pretty decent cup holder. It even has holes to hold a pen or tire pressure gauge.   |

 Awesome! I always try to balance my drinks between the gas tank and tool box. It works sometimes. Thanks for sharing this, I will be doing the same.

I have two gimbal mounted drink holders on my dash, they work great for short cups of coffee and alum cans, and keeps spills and sloshes to a minumum. I love the floor mounted holder for my taller coffee cup

I like that, Chief. I'm going to copy your idea if you don't mind. One thing that speaks well for it, I know that my favorite coffee go-cup will fit. It's just like yours. I've had it for several years, and have never had another that I liked as well, before or since.

What a great idea, I am going to do that myself. I have been wondering where to put a coffee while taking a ride. Problem solved.

Copy away - that's why I shared it
With limited real estate to put a cup holder, I saw this location as about the best for me. When I saw this at HF, it seemed just the right size for that spot. The holes aren't big enough for extra large cups or bottles, so be sure to check your cup first, just to be sure.Steve

I just got back from a Saturday morning test drive with my coffee. It's 44 degrees here, so I was glad to have my coffee along! The cup holder worked great. It is rock solid and easy to reach. It's a winner

Glad you like it. I've used it several times in the last week and its been great. Early Sunday morning it was about 30 degrees here. I drove a couple miles each way to Hardees for breakfast biscuits and coffee for my wife and I. It held both coffees just fine.
