I'm trying to identify the application of this exhaust manifold. I've seen a several discussions on the net about A659 manifolds, but they talk about the A659 number being on either the outer right wing or below the heat flapper chamber. This one has it on the back side (facing the block). Can anyone provide insight into its application? Thanks. Steve

Why would it matter where the casting number is? How many suppliers of this manifold did Willys use anyway? Was this a Willys made part? If made by Willys, who know when they changed the casting number location & why.

IIRR, Willys-Overland owned Wilson Foundry, so you could say it was a Willys-made part. Maybe wherever the guy making the mold pattern or the guy setting up the mold felt like putting the number on any given day is where the number wound up. The boss probably didn’t care as long as it got on there somewhere. Don’t forget, these and all parts and the complete jeep were made by people, and each person may want his product to be slightly different from others. A659 is a casting number, what is the part number? May or may not be the same. If the CJ2-A part number is the same as the MB part number, same as the casting number or not, it’s the same part.

The actual part number for the CJ-2A exhaust manifold assembly was A-912 according to the 3rd edition parts list for models CJ-2A and CJ-3A copyright 1949, page 29.
This would probably include the manifold heat control parts if I am reading the parts manual right. Apparently the manifold itself was not supplied as a bare part. A-659 may have been the original bare manifold part number...or not. Usually casting numbers are put on a raw casting to tell the machine shop what engineering drawing to refer to for machining dimensions, The casting number is almost always not the actual finished part number but may be close to the same number. According to Fred Coldwell, who ought to know, A-659 was the original military # for the MA and MB. And was only the sub assembly you have. It was not available as a separate replacement part and A-912 is the complete assembly .

As Kansas said, every casting got a casting number, and if it was offered as a single part, the casting number often became the part number. If more parts were added, as in the heat control parts, it became an “assembly” and got a new part number. Any MB part used as-is on the CJ2-A kept its A-XXX MB part number. Any part that was altered from its MB configuration or designed new from scratch was issued a new 5- or 6-digit all-number part number. So the CJ2-A exhaust manifold is a carried-over MB part with the same casting number and the same part number. BW

Thanks guys. It doesn't really matter, its just a spare in my parts bin. With the unusual location of the A659 casting, I thought it might be a rare variation worth millions Apparently not. Oh well, back on the shelf it goes.

My theory of the evolution of A-659 or whatever the original bare manifold part number was is that it may have been supplied bare in the original MB but due to problems in the Army field maintenance shops during the war it was faster to have the manifold supplied with heat parts to get equipment back in service quicker...so, A-912 was supplied as the replacement assembly at some point during the war. It then carried over after the war to the CJ series.

I love for this kind of data. So leaping conclusions - The majority of the Lefty's would have the A659 number on the outside of the exhaust casting. Of course there are examples of Willys using the First In Still Here inventory system. Which leads to whatever is handy that day being moved other floor for the production build. Shortages lead to older stuff showing up on the line. Nothing is absolute.

If the name of the part is an "assembly", that means it is made up of multiple parts. The A-912 Exhaust Manifold is an assembly. A-659 is the part number for the raw exhaust manifold. A-912 Exhaust Manifold Assembly is made up 10 parts: 1) A-5565 Exhaust Manifold & Bush. Yours looks like either a later or reproduction one. You will see 2 circles with numbers in them on the original ones. It is the month and date.
