I have a 1946 VEC, which has a great recorded history on it. the owner before me had it "professionally" restored but they did a lot of things wrong (mainly wrong colors on pieces). I have been tinkering the last week or so, which has led to more research, which, in turn, has led to more questions.
This site has been very helpful in teaching me about what is supposed to be painted what color and where mine falls in VEC production. Interesting things learned are that footman loops should be black, gas tanks were originally body color and replacements black and the transmission cover was body color or black. I am curious where these things crossed over. to always black. Our jeeps have all had lives and I depend upon original pictures to try and get things technically correct. I am attaching some original photos and have a few questions. In the dash photo, you can see body colored gas tank and transmission cover. I suspect this is a factory photo and of an early VEC. The questions I have are as follows: 1. The three holes around the ignition switch are for what? I think I read something a while back that said that was where the original ignition switch was attached. That seems like an awfully wide mounting. What was there and what kind of screws were used? 2. in both photos you can see something to the left of the light switch. Does anyone know what that was? 3. What is the handle on the dash, most obvious in the dash picture? I can't read what it says and in the picture it is obviously pulled out. Thanks in advance for your answers. I know there will be more questions to come. BTW, anyone have a Chaff Screen they would part with?

The handle to the right of the headlight switch is the Governor handle. The three screws around the key switch held the keyed coil that mounted behind the dash.

The three screws around the ignition switch holds the ignition coil bracket. The coil had the ignition switch built in the coil. The "T" handle is a motor speed governor control and has governor written (cast) on it. Jim I am to slow on the key pad.

The knob to the left of the light switch is the original location for the heater control switch. Mine still has the knockout in place, in case yours does not have a through hole there.

Hello,
One other item. The dash lip area below the light switch should have a toggle type switch to operate the dash light bulb. At least that is where the switch is on my 45 2A. There is no high beam indicator on mine. Zootin |

Zootin, That is interesting. I have owned several CJs and never seen that. Does anyone know if this was carried forward in later years?

I see it now on the schematics. It looks like it was dropped on the 3A and replaced with a connector. Thanks for the heads up!

https://walcks4wd.com/Switch-Dash-Light-CJ2A-1945--Mid-Year-1947_p_1944.html This is the dash light switch that bolts underneath the dash to turn on and off the dash lights on CJ2A models up to serial number 116421. The switch is bolted on the far left side of the dash lip with the switch facing towards the floor. The screw spacing is 1 1/8" and is very close to the original switch. This is a must have for a proper restoration of a part that is typically missing. |
