I have a question regarding using some extra (free) 20" floor trusses for my shop.

Do you have the specs on those? One way to get pretty close to knowing what you can expect from them is find your local code for floor load for residential. From those charts you can see how much you can span with what dimension trusses for an expected load. There needs to be a margin included.
An example is I was asked to install a large hot tub in an upstairs bathroom. The floor was rated for its current expected loads: (2x8's 16" OC) 12 foot span. To meet code with the added load of a full hot tub we needed to split the span to 6 foot with a 3"x12" LVL. Industrial applications are different than a house with its minor loads (just people and furniture) but you will get the idea regarding safe practice. Edited by jhg - 06 June 2023 at 7:22pm |

I know what these trusses will span the way they are, they are rated to span 28’. I only need them to span 16’ and I’m planning on cutting down and modifying the one end so that it will be the right length.
I had a close friend who was a truss designer that saw them and what I wanted to do. He said it’ll be no problem and would send me the exact way I should modify them… unfortunately he died before we got a chance to hookup.

If you can duplicate the end design (ie if the distance from last web to end is same as they are now, just shorter overall) for your intended span that will work. I don't know if that will work out but it needs to be pretty close.
Rated 28' span, for what load? Regardless. Sounds like you can figure it out.
