                                       Group 24-04 WHEEL BRAKE MECHANISM

PLATE, wheel brake backing, assembly.........................PART No. A-450

This Part # is from the '45 parts list.

I noticed as I was going thru my front axle on my '45 that the bendix stamp was different than a later Ser.#145xxx The round one is from the '45 (one on the right)
  Anyone else notice this?

FWIW Gary...

When we recently did the brakes on my '48, I too, noticed this...but on mine, the front brake plates matched (had the circular, as I recall), and the rears matched each other, but were the "text line" marking. Couldn't see any other differences, so they're probably interchangeable.

On the parts list it has a quanity of 4 ea. so I would assume that front and back are the same. I was just wondering if this was anything to look for...I guess it was whatever they had on hand, or maybe made at different plants.

The backing plate on the left has the extra drain hole as used on the rear of 41 and 44 axles. It will also fit the front but the extra hole serves no purpose there.

Bruce: I see the "extra" hole that you're referring to, and honestly can't say whether mine had that or not (I'm 300 miles away, at the moment), but...is there a different part number for front vs.rear?

No.  However, the early backing plate was superseded ...
  • the '45 parts list shows #A-450 for both.  At this time it only covered the full-float rear end
  • the '47 parts list shows #641917 for both.  By this time the full-float had been long replaced w/the semi-float, and these backing plates would have the drain hole.
I suspect it was simpler/cheaper to stock just one part, w/drain hole, since it would work on any axle.

i have a question about these myself. all of mine has a bendix stamp on the plates. 2 of the plates have adjusters, 2 do not have adjusters. i will post some pics with part numbers this afternoon. i pretty sure, not 100% that the backing plates with adjusters was on the front. between blasting, and steaming i got a little mixed up.

Here's another variation... Anyone seen the backing plates with a "soda can" slot for the wheel cylinder instead of the 4 holes?
