Newbie here.  Not real sure what I bought, but here goes.  Found in a barn outside of Redding CA.  The PO took it apart 8 years ago and immediately lost interest in the project.  It's completely there, just in parts.  Data tag says 1946 CJ2A.  NO RUST anywhere.  Engine casting  number 6 641087 LW6 A N1GRN2.  Engine number behind water pump, 164056. No J or CJ.  Original serial number tags on the right firewall.  BODY number, 40366.  Can't find any numbers on the frame. a day long search of the www, the best I can figure is it is a early, to mid year build cj2a.  Mid 46 willys changed out the 3 dash plates to a single long one like mine has.  But it still has the early style lollipop windshield tilt arms.  Seat frames and cushions are perfect condition.  The factory paint. Under the rattle can black is pasture green.  T98 and t18 trans and transfer case.  No damage to the windshield or frame.  The grill is an early stamped with the set back turn signals.  The engine # comes back to a 47 cj?  Maybe an early replacement engine.  And most importantly, NO RUST, anywhere.  Thanks

It looks like a good start, no rust is a really good. You have a mb/gpw windshield, the cj windshield wouldn’t have the rifle mount and would have the bolts for bow storage. Looks like they started a steering box swap too, could be a plus depending how it’s done and if you want to finish it or go original. Your hood if not stamped willys could be military too, I noticed it has the windshield latches on it.

Maybe an Army surplus left over.  The serial number starts with CJ2A.

I doubt it, you have a cj2a. Military clones are popular, it could be they had started doing that or they just needed a replacement windshield and got one from a military Jeep.

For those in the know, the vin and body tag on the right side of the firewall, are those attached with flat head screws, or twist rivets?  Thanks

Looks like a nice find!! It has military hood and window. It does not have a t98 it has the factory t90 still. It has an early horn mount, it may be a pile of parts that was pieces together

On a ‘46, the serial number and the body tag number should match. The frame tag that should be riveted to the outside of the LF frame horn just behind the bumper should match those numbers. The tags on the body should be retained by pan-head, straight-slot screws, and the frame tag should be riveted.
The engine is probably a replacement, but a salvage-yard replacement, not a factory replacement.
Your transmission is probably a T-90 as chasendeer said, not a T-98 or a T-18, which is also a transmission. Your transfer case would be a D-18.
No military jeeps were built in 1946. The last MB was built on August 20, 1945, and only CJ(Civilian Jeep)2-A’s were built after that. The armed forces did not need any CJ2-A’s, they had plenty of MB’s left over.
You definitely have a CJ2-A body with an MB or GPW windshield and hood. I can’t see the front of the frame horns to tell whether there are bumper gussets present, but the bumper appears to be a later unit. The front engine plate and LH engine mount frame bracket appear to be correct CJ2-A.
Nice jeep, a definite keeper!   BW
It is NOT a Jeep Willys! It is a Willys jeep.

Interesting to see the head is non-ribbed and secured with bolts instead of studs. I don’t know about MBs, but GPWs switched from bolts to studs in December 1944.
