OK – deep breath…here we go…

Brand new to posting and making a thread on any forum but not new to this site.  I have been reading the vast number of posts here for months to the point that I feel like I already know many of you.  I am blown away by the willingness of so many to share their knowledge and love of Jeeps with others.   I have decided it’s time to stop being a lurker and start being a participant.  Hope I’m doing this right – if not please let me know.

I should probably start with a little back ground.  As a teenager some of my most fun memories are of wheeling under the power lines with my friend Chris in his flatfender Jeep as we searched for Mellonheads.  Local folklore tells of creatures with gigantic misshapen heads that were reputed to live there.  Never did get a glimpse of one (they are very good at hiding) but there was plenty of rocks and mud to play in. It was all great until one day the 4 banger’s oil pan found a big rock in a mud hole and we seized the little engine up.  I could swear I heard laughter coming from the bushes.

Lots of stories form our child hood and they are all good ones.  Too bad that some times things go badly for the Jeep.  The stories are good to hear. Thanks for sharing.

In my 20’s my wife and I saw a little yellow 1955 CJ5 for sale by the road.  It had the rounded fenders but had a L134 in it. Guess someone had already swapped engines.  We had great fun wheeling at the sewage treatment plant (that doesn’t sound good does it) until the engine threw a rod.  Instead of fixing it I decided to drop in a V8 (more power- grunt, grunt, grunt).  This was before the internet and all the shared information so I was on my own.  It took me 3 years of slogging thru junk yards and trying different parts until my “Frankenstein” came to life.  It was very cool except I had never thought about the gearing and it would only go 45MPH.  Lesson learned!  It was still a blast to drive and I was very proud of my handiwork.   Unfortunately that same year (1983) the service company I worked for closed up and I decided to start my own.  I sold the Jeep to be able to buy my first service truck.

My first build almost done 1983.

Since then I have collecting flatfenders with the intention of someday building another Jeep.  Suddenly I’m 62 (how did that happen!) so I figure it’s time.  My ultimate goal would look something like this:  3A or M38 body and frame, v6, granny gear 4 speed, D18 big hole transfer case with Tera low, D30 front, D44 offset flanged rear, both with lockers, 4:27 diffs, disk brakes, power steering, slight wheelbase stretch, and 33” – 35” tires.  I’m trying to check all my want boxes:  Very trail capable and low crawl ratio, good road manners and cruise rpm, and cool looks.

Here’s what I have to work with:  4 Cj2A parts jeeps, 1945 MB – very solid but disassembled,  1947 CJ2A rebuilt with reproduction body.

No pics of the 45 MB yet.  It's in the basement covered with 17 years worth of stuff.  Yes I have the "Pack rat gene"!

Welcome to the forum. Born/raised in Ohio until 6 years ago when I drove my '47 to Oregon. I vaguely remember being told stories of the Mellonheads. LOL
Do I see a Monte Carlo in the one photo?

I also like the line-up!

So... My dilemma is how do I turn the stuff I have into my dream jeep?  I sort of have a plan.  First, I  want to convert Grasshopper to all disk brakes and a dual res master cylinder.  I have already purchased all the Tracker parts along with the adapter plates from Brennan.  My brother and I are currently doing that conversion on his 1951 CJ3A.  We should have those projects done in time for the Willys Sping Reunion where I hope to meet many of you!

Next,  I thought about turning the MB into the dream jeep but from what I gather here I would likely be accused of sacrilege by the military people and possibly end up tarred and feathered.  Since the military history aspect is not really my bag, I should probably probably put that one together and sell it to someone who is in to that.  That's project number two and would help fund the dream jeep build.

Finally, the dream jeep build, which I am already basing on many of the builds here and am so excited to start.

My first question is should I make a separate thread for each of these 3 projects or lump them all together here?

I am anxious to hear comments and feedback on anything and everything.  Thanks!!!!

I would build one good vehicle out of the best of what you have. You certainly have a great start there!

Hi 64CJ5! Yup, I'm sure we all have cool Jeep stories - that's one of the things we all have in common!  Looking forward to hearing other's stories - hopefully in person one day!  (6' apart of courseBig smile)  Homer's voice:  "Stupid Corona virus!"

Hi berettajeep!  Thanks!  Nice to meet a displaced Buckeye! GO BUCKS!  Wow that must have been a great trip in an old Jeep!  Others have Bigfoot, we had Mellonheads!  Good eye on the Monte Carlo - our last big boat.  That hood went on forever!

Welcome aboard.

I was in the same place as you a few years ago when I started my build thread. I wasn't quite sure where to post my build as it wasn't a stock build. After some thought I posted the whole thing up in the Modifications section.

Now that said, that build thread has grown to include a CJ2a (ish) a couple trailers and now a complete second Jeep build. My point being, I don't think there is a right or wrong place to post up. This group here loves builds of all kinds. Sometimes you start in one place and end up going down all kinds of roads. So just post up and go with your flow. I doubt you will ever hear anyone in this joint object!

Good luck with the build. I miss when my field looked like yours. I used to have a pretty solid collection. If only I knew then what I know now.......

Hi nofender!  Thank you for your advice and encouragement.  I have read many of your posts as I have followed other threads.  Now I will look for your thread as I am anxious to see your builds.  Being in Maryland, do you plan on going to the Willys Spring Reunion?  If so I'll be the the guy with the "Kid in the candy shop" look on his face!
